The Lut Desert, widely referred to as Dasht-e Lut (Persian: دشت لوت, “Emptiness Plain”), is a large salt desert in Iran. It is the world’s 27th-largest desert, and it’s a UNESCO’s World Heritage site. The surface of its sand has been measured at temperatures as high as 70 °C (159 °F), making it one of the world’s driest and hottest places.
Of all the deserts I have visited, Lut desert in Iran is probably the most special one in terms of its geology. What makes this desert so interesting is that it not only has a lot of sand (no surprise there), it also has tons of massive rock structures.
Iran’s geography consists of a plateau surrounded by mountains and divided into drainage basins. Dasht-e Lut is one of the largest of these desert basins, 480 kilometers (300 mi) long and 320 kilometers (200 mi) wide. The center of the desert has been sculpted by the wind into a series of parallel ridges and furrows, extending over 150 km (93 mi) and reaching 75 meters (246 ft) in height. This area is also riddled with ravines and sinkholes. Clearly, this is exciting stuff for photography!
On one of our days in the desert I decided to bring my group to a location that I had scouted a year earlier for sunset. I asked Daniella to walk into the frame and pose for us to give a sense of scale. Moments before the sun dropped behind the horizon, the sun turned bright red and a fiery glow dropped over the landscape like a silk blanket.

every time there is more places where a guided group tour is the only way to visit it. The Palacio da Bolsa in Porto, Portugal is the one of them. With so many people it is very difficult to get a decent shot of interior carefully composed and bracketed for shadows. On my visit the best I could do was to focus on details that were missed by other. when they looked at a portrait of this or that king, I was looking for small things, shades and lights, mood adding details... the sun lit up the interior nicely and there were many beautiful and rich color to catch, nevertheless I liked more a version with LUT applied...
Lancashire United Transport operated several of these Atkinson Alpha's with Northern Counties B34C bodywork with standing room for 27 and dates from 1954. A Guy Arab coach with Roe bodywork is seen in the background at Swinton around the mid sixties.
This one proved something of a challenge to add colour to. The original Northern Counties image used featured in the 1970s book about the bodybuilder. Back in the day, photo reproduction in the book was about as good as it got, but the image was (by modern standards and what's required for this hobby) grainy, contrasty and shadowy. I've never seen a colour picture of this short-lived Lancashire United fleet member so I was minded to have a go. The odd green shades in the interior are based on those of comparable Fleetlines delivered to that operator.
I've no life history of 802 RTC to hand, but I haven't any reason to suppose that it was any more successful than any other Wulfrunian. Did it find its way, like just about all the others, to West Riding? If memory serves me correctly, then it was also the only NCME bodied 'Wulf'.
Just in case anyone isn't aware, the Wulfrunian was Guy's attempt to appease fleet engineers who liked the engines at the front. However, the large 10.45 litre Gardner 6LX didn't leave much room for the driver. The staircase was almost invariably on the nearside which was odd for a UK 'decker. It had independent front suspension (air springs all round) and disc brakes on the front. Unfortunately, the one thing it didn't appear to have was power assisted steering. Most of the West Riding examples ended up having the upper deck front seating removed to ease the weight on the front suspension components. All in all, it failed to come up with the goods, misjudged the market, and fatally wounded Guy Motors in the process. The concept was far more successfully exploited by Ailsa Trucks in their building of the Volvo/ Ailsa double decker. They used a small 6.7 litre heavily turbo-charged engine which took up less space. They also adopted a more simple approach to specification and had great success with their offering.
