Oh goodness more vertical pictures wowie XD
Oldschoolie! My twelfth year with BJDs and I've never had an El - until recently … Got this cutie in a trade with my friend and gave him a new look (with tiny tusks).
The first week in October 2025 marks some 30 years since last few survivors of the ex LUT Leyland Leopards were withdrawn from GMT / GM Buses service.
436 was the last withdrawal at Bolton and preceded the handful at Wigan by a few days.
Much loved and respected by staff, the ultra reliable Leopards were complete masters of any job. They always seemed far superior to any of the motley collection of Leopards we had at Crook Street before their arrival.
Fast, powerful, good brakes, good ride, no rattles or draughts belied their wooden framed bodies and tribute to them must remain that some achieved a service life of some 19 years with GM where the norm before dereg would have been 13.
Even more significant was the handful which went on to see further service with other operators, most notable Busways in Newcastle.
GM Buses actually borrowed a Rebodied Leopard form Blue Bus in Horwich for inspection with a view to rebodying some of the ex LUT ones and 451 was partially stripped and remained in Crook Street like that for quite a while but naught came to the idea. I suspect that access via two steps was a major consideration and I well remember with a glut of single deckers, some bright spark decided to employ them on the 15-minute 526 service up Halliwell Road to Smithills Hall requiring 4 buses where a high percentage of passengers were Pensioners, many of whom had difficulty getting up the steps.
Masters of the Express services 7 and 9 from Egerton and Blackrod to Manchester before the Olympians came when time became a constant issue ......
But the best time and place to enjoy them was late turn on Tonge Moor Road where the throaty exhaust would set of many of the parked cars vibration alarms ... if the driver got it right!!! or the last 554 to Eccles which came back to Crook Street private on the M602 and St Peters Way!! but thats another story.
Oh such happy days!
So a few photos, mainly depot shots, to show the Leopards in some of their different liveries and associated depots.
Here is 431 JDK922P, one of the minority double door examples alongside 233 WBN467T both is GMT brown Orange and White parked up in Swinton depot.

Filosofia do Sucesso
Infalivelmente.
A luta pela vida, nem sempre é vantajosa;
Nem aos fortes, nem ao espertos.
Mais cedo ou mais tarde,
Quem cativa a vitória é aquele que crê plenamente:
Eu conseguirei!
