Star trails imaged from the B. Everett Jordan dam in central North Carolina on 2023 March 20. How bright should a single straight-out-of-camera (SOOC) jpg image be to get a desired brightness in a composite image derived from a sequence of SOOC jpg images? Left image: single straight-out-of-camera jpg image with back of camera histogram. All of the histogram profiles start to the right of the origin. Center image: 25 frame composite from Achim Schaller's Startrails application used in Lighten mode (with gaps in individual trails) with no additional adjustments. Right image: 25 frame composite from Achim Schaller's Startrails application used in Lighten-Screen-Blend (LSB) mode (without gaps in individual trails) with no additional adjustments. I usually composite images using the LSB approach, and for my taste the right composite image is too bright by more than one stop. The center composite image is close to the right brightness for my taste as there is still some detail evident in the dark treeline in the background. Click on image for a magnified view.
