MH-60 Seahawk helicopter on USS Peleliu (LHA-5), Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, United States Navy
The Aqua Luna Junk passed by Victoria Harbour near one of the six AV-8B Harrier Attack Plane [1] deployed by the USMC on USS Peleliu’s hanger during their recent visit in Hong Kong [2]. Across the harbour on the other side is the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) located in Wan Chai [3]. Its architecture looks like a wings in flight, and thus creates an interesting echo of forms with the plane on deck.
With its unmistakeable red sails, the Aqua Luna is a boat which is modelled after the ancient Chinese sailing vessel/ship design developed during the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) [4]. The junk (ship) can be seen in many of the photos and paintings depicting Hong Kong in history, and thus became a symbol of Hong Kong. These boat rides are ranked fairly highly by travellers on different travel sites.

I photographed this panorama stitched using five RAW captures on the 6D while riding the Star Ferry across the Victoria Harbour, so camera shake is a bit of an issue for some of the images. But I feel that it is important to have an image which shows the complete length of the ship.
If you zoom in closer on the right hand side near the helicopters, you will see some people hanging around closed to the deck. Those people are in fact not standing on the ship but photographers lining up to photograph this boat on the entire roof of 海運大廈 Ocean Terminal [1] where the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) was docked in Hong Kong.
The rows of architecture on the left are residential development in Union Square, West Kowloon [2] featuring many gigantic “feng shui holes” whereas the architecture to the right are commercial architecture in Tsim Sha Tsui which are part of the 海港城 Harbour City shopping mall complex.

Technically speaking, this does not really need to be a panorama stitch. But I am obsessed with details, and if I use a wide angle lens to photograph this then the resulting resolution will not be as high as I want it to be. Also, what I pictured in my head is the sheer width of the ship.
And so I made my decision to photograph 10 full-resolution RAW captures at 400mm to be stitched together after the fact. At this resolution, you can clearly make out each bolt on the aircraft as well as the rain drops on the net—details which would likely be lost if a single wide angle capture was made.

Someone on Flickr commented that an earlier shot of the plane + Aqua Luna Junk would look far better if I crop out the wing bits [1]. But of course they have no way in knowing that I in fact already have a shot which is even better.
For each capture that I make, I make a quick decision at the moment of capture on what it is that I wish to say. For the previous shot, it was about the wings of the plane vs the wing form of the HKCEC, so the contrast of forms is there.
For this shot, it is about the contrast of forms: the straight red sails of the boat vs the curves of the planes accented with reds.
To achieve maximum resolution which I seek, I try to assert an editorial eye at the moment of capture at different zoom length rather to resort to cropping after the fact.

A sailor in “crackerjack” white uniform salutes to crew members boarding the ship while another enlisted sailor chats with another sailor named Callen in “Navy Working Uniform”—a camouflage which is digitally printed in multiple colors. According to Wikipedia, this should be the Navy Type III MARPAT [1].
The Crackerjacks—so nicknamed because of the Navy-uniformed figure that adorns the Cracker Jack snack box—are my all-time favorite uniforms worn by military units. Most probably because they feature bell-bottom cuts—a cut of pants which is closed to impossible for me to buy anywhere and I used to custom tailor them for myself—as many of my friends in New York knows.
It is for this same reason why I love the clothes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier [2], a fashion designer based in France who has had a long history of designing outfits which bears many naval uniform influences.

A tattoo-laden US Navy officer at the crew boarding security checkpoint tried to figure out what that giant scope was pointing at him—obviously, it was my lens, which is longer than some of the machine guns employed at the military.
His colleague on the other hand was too busy fiddling with his phone to notice me. Meanwhile, the security team from Hong Kong just gave me blank stares the whole time I was photographing them.
Nice tattoos! Interesting socks also—a bit unusual for this weather. Pants are a bit too short for my taste—though I suppose it is more practical to wear pants which do not go all the way to the ground for combat purposes.
He is very far away—this is a 400mm / ISO 12800 shot.

A half-raised American flag was seen hanging at the tail end of the USS Peleliu (LHA-5) next to one of the six AV-8B Harrier attack planes currently deployed on the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship of the United States Navy [1].
Made by the McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing), the AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) ground-attack aircraft [2]. Since in service, the AV-8Bs have provided close air support for ground troops and performed armed reconnaissance, thus proving themselves versatile assets for the US military.
Of particular interest to me is the cockpit—as from far away I had thought that there was a person inside, only to discover during processing that it was just how the seat was designed.
I do not know why the flag is half-raised. The ship is not currently in active duty for combat according to available sources, so it might have been lowered to mourn the losses from the Boston Marathon bombings which happened earlier this week [3].

If you have a plane which averaged US$24–30 million per unit [1] lying on a completely open space while the ship set sail, you would bind it security on the deck also, with multiple chains, as seen here on the deck of the USS Peleliu (LHA-5).
