Las imágenes peregrinas del grupo escultórico del Santo Cristo en el Calvario compuesto por el Santísimo Cristo de las Penas, la Virgen María y San Juan Evangelista salieron en procesión anoche Jueves Santo, por las calles del centro histórico de Valencia.
La procesión del Cristo de las Penas se caracteriza tradicionalmente por su especial recogimiento y devoción, ya que las imágenes únicamente van acompañadas por el sonido de los timbales. Finalizó con el “Acte de Recolliment” acompañado por el coro Barlovento.
La Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de las Penas, muy venerada en Valencia, ya existía en el siglo XIV y se mantuvo hasta el siglo XVIII. En el año 1993 la iglesia de San Juan del Hospital recuperó la procesión del Cristo de las Penas en la noche del Jueves Santo.
Las imágenes peregrinas permiten difundir la devoción al Santo Cristo en el Calvario y fomentar el buen estado de conservación de las tallas originales de gran valor histórico. Las imágenes originales se encuentran expuestas y pueden ser veneradas en la Capilla del Calvario de la iglesia de San Juan del Hospital.
La imagen del Cristo de las Penas es una talla en madera policromada del siglo XIV, que representa a Cristo en el árbol de la Cruz.
Las imágenes de la Virgen María y San Juan Evangelista son dos tallas de madera del siglo XII cuya policromía imita la textura de las telas de la época, con motivos vegetales y detalles de oro en los puños, cuello y bordes.
