The Walled City of Lahore covers an area of 256 ha with a population of 200,000. The city walls were destroyed shortly after the British annexed the Punjab in 1849 and were replaced with gardens, some of which exist today. The Circular Road links the old city to the urban network. Access to the Walled City is still gained through the 13 ancient gates, or their emplacements.
The convoluted and picturesque streets of the inner city remain almost intact, but the rapid demolition and frequently illegal rebuilding taking place throughout the city is causing the historic fabric to be eroded and replaced by inferior constructions. Historic buildings are no exception, and some have been encroached upon. The few old houses in the city are usually two or three stories tall, with brick façades, flat roofs, richly carved wooden balconies and overhanging windows.
The origins of the original Lahore are unspecific. According to carbon dating evidence of archaeological findings in the Lahore Fort, the time period may start as early as 2,000 B.C.E. Lahore had many names throughout its history. Mohallah Maulian represents one of the two most probable sites of the original Lahore. Sootar Mandi (the yarn market) inside Lohari Gate, had been called Mohallah Chaileywala Hammam located in Machli Hatta Gulzar, just off Chowk Chalka, Lahore's original red-light area.

The largest of Old Delhi's monuments in Lal Qila, known in English as the Red Fort. It was commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, as his personal seat of his new capital Shahjahanabad, the seventh city of Delhi. This served as the capital of the Mughal Empire until the British seized control in 1857. Work began in 1638 and was completed ten years later. The palace gets it's named after the red sandstone brick it is constructed from and was modelled on the fort at Agra.
The fort has been designed in typical Mughal style and contains all the trappings you'd expect from a Mughal Palace including: Halls for Public and Private Audiences, domed and arched marble palaces, plush private apartments, a mosque, and elaborately designed gardens. The fort's ramparts are over 2km in circumference and are only interupted twice by the western Lahore Gate and the southern Delhi Gate. Lal Qila is situated by the Yamuna River to the east which supplied the fort's moat, and the "stream of paradise" which ran through every pavillion.

Minar-e-Pakistan is a tall minaret in Iqbal Park Lahore, built in commemoration of the Lahore Resolution. The minaret reflects a blend of Mughal and modern architecture, and is constructed on the site where on March 23, 1940, seven years before the formation of Pakistan, the Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution (Qarardad-e-Lahore), demanding the creation of Pakistan. This was the first official declaration to establish a separate homeland for the Muslims living in the subcontinent. Pakistan now celebrates this day as a national holiday each year.
