Early Käthe Kruse Doll I with wide hips. Her torso and legs are made from a waterproof cotton developed by the Austro-German surgeon Theodor Billroth. Käthe Kruse experimented with this fabric in the hope that it would make her dolls more robust - and washable. But it proved to be prone to tearing. This doll's body has many repairs that testify to the fabric's relative fragility. Her dog is a Steiff Sealyham.
