I usually avoid taking pictures of homeless people, but I fell in love with this man who was talking to himself (very interesting conversation, obviously). In spite of his situation, he has managed to keep his dignity… and a white handkerchief in his breast pocket.

One of the reasons why I love Greece…

Not really a hill -- yet. The Panathenaic Stadium, also called Kallimarmaro ("beautiful marble"), was one of the major public works projects of Lykourgos. It was first built in 330 BC, but took the shape you can see now (well, half of it…) thanks to the Athenian magnate Herodes Attikos between 139 and 144 AD. It was gradually destroyed over the years and robbed of its marble. It was restored in 1895 thanks to G. Averoff and inaugurated on April 1896 for the revival of the modern Olympics.

Thanks Blue & GT for turning this gallery into a "salon littéraire".

Thanks EVERYONE for your kind comments and invitations !!!!!

Η πρώτη λέξη που έμαθα στα ελληνικά ήταν "κέφι" (και η δεύτερη ήταν "υπομονή" !). Τίποτα δεν θα μας χαλάσει το κέφι, έτσι δεν είναι;

The first word I learned in Greek was "kefi", which means something like "joie de vivre". Nothing can ruin it !

Pnyx (upper terrace). This hill is where the People Assembly (Ekklesia) used to meet, where the great Athenian orators (Themistocles, Pericles, Demosthenes…) addressed the people of Athens.

Πολυκατοικία means "building", but literally it would mean something like "multiple house", to emphasize the very unusual character of this new construction: even three-storeyed houses were rare in Athens till the 1950's.

Athens, Zappeion's Garden. In the background, statue of Evangelis Zappas, by Ioannis Kossos (1864), the very first full-length statue erected in (modern) Athens.
