Drowning in a Digital Niagara Falls: We are inundated by digitalness around us. I think at this moment we are at the peak of overload with the advent of all of the very exciting technological tools we have for communication. Thus, right now we are nearly drowning in it! But I do believe that very same technology will also soon provide us a "lifeboat" to help filter, organize, and makes sense of all that data. The I-Open Knowledge Wheel maps the organization and progressive dissemination of human knowledge in the Civic Space in Open Source Economic Development. Civic Wisdom is the interviews contributed to I-Open community for sharing. The Knowledge Wheel is parallel to the F/OSS progression of code to data to content. I-Open organizes civic intelligence (code) to storage (data) to publication (content). Creative applications can fragment or work data at any given point in the outward progression of disseminating content.

The Visual Sign Universe (VSU) was a response to a commission from the advertising agency DDB España to enhance their Sign Bank: an analytical tool that monitors social trends and groups them in terms of various categories (Wellbeing, Values, Tension, Technology, Youth, Heroes…).

The VSU fulfils a dual function: first, it facilitates the analytical work of planners and copywriters in identifying and classifying new trends that affect society and its forms of consumption, and second, it is a powerful tool of communication between the agency and its clients, useful for explaining the creative process, or part of it, from the idea through to its connection with social trends.

The distro is focused on one big feature consisting of data collection forms like you see here, a simple workflow for producing and viewing reports, and a reporting interface to view lists of submitted forms and export them to CSV or a print-friendly page. The main form is used to create an "event," which is the disaster or crisis itself, to which any number of seven other data collection forms can be filled out and related to.

The site has a custom calendar, using the MIT Simile Timeline visualization to look at its large set of events. This easily slipped into the Open Atrium system as part of a new calendar feature.
