Die beeindruckende Basilika Saint Nicolas hat die höchsten Säulen aller französischen Kirchen. Die verdrehten Säulen am Querhaus messen 28 m, das Gewölbe 32 m. Wie man sehen kann hat das Langhaus einen deutlichen Knick, was wahrscheinlich auf die beengten Bauverhältnisse zurück zu führen ist.
Well, it snowed today.
Sort of.
It's Sunday and that means it's the day for a drive in the country so my request to Norm this morning was to head towards the snowbelt area just north of us. It was such a relief to finally see some snow after the bland, grey weather we've had lately.
On the way back we drove into Erin. It didn't look quite this sunny but as I was walking down the street I thought of the way the town is crowded with people on fine days, browsing through gift shops because, after all, who doesn't need another teddy bear or knick knack?
Our daughter was quite young when we first went to Erin and at that time there was a Steen's Dairy Bar where one could buy wonderful ice cream. When we went in Katie was very excited because of the counter and diner stools. She'd only seen them in movies and quite honestly I hadn't seen them for a while myself.
When I was a little girl my mother would occasionally take my brother and I to Woolworth's where there was a diner in the store with exactly those kinds of stools. I remember thinking it was such an adventure because we rarely ate out and when we did it was usually a 'proper' sort of restaurant. The most exciting thing to me as a kid at the Woolworth's diner was to see how many gums were under the counter which was amusing, as well as embarrassing, to both my mother and the woman behind the counter whose job it was to scrape them off.
Did you know people used to do that with their gum? I guess they thought it was too much effort to put it in a napkin or even swallow it. Instead, they would stick their gum under the counter before they ate their egg salad sandwich. Obviously, it wasn't something Emily Post would do but it vastly amusing to me as a kid.
Gracious, I wonder if people still do that?

Die Kombination aus Schnee und einem stärkeren Wind sorgt in Schleswig-Holstein oft trotz geringer Schneemengen für beachtliche Verwehungen.
Die Knicklandschaft für die der Norden so berühmt ist kann dies teilweise verhindern.
So fängt sich der aufgewirbelt Schnee im Wind an den Erhöhungen des Knicks und sammelt sich dort.
So kann es sein das auf den Feldern kaum weiße Pracht liegt die Ränder jedoch zugeweht sind.
Ein Beispiel stellte dieses Feld östlich von Wasbek da wo sich das Chaospulver schön im Knick gesammelt hat.

Here's something new, I processed the RAW-file through Picasa, which gave the picture some warmth but also some strange colours.
One more (this is the last) photo of old knick-knacks standing on the mantelpiece.
I like this mood of transporting itself in time that small interior fittings can create.

Maybe one day when she has developed a few manners they will be allowed back :)
I made this in High school. It is a piece of teak from the spoke of a ships tiller wheel that I cut at an angle. The cross is made of shavings from filing a bone and mixing the bone dust with epoxy then filling the cross shape I had carved out. After hardening, it was sanded and sanded and polished. I made the shelf it sits on also, but you can't really see that to well... : )
