It's my last day at my old job tomorrow, and I'll leave with mixed feelings. I'll miss quite a few of my co-workers, but everything else I'll be happy to be done with. Currently I hardly find the time to be active on Flickr, but I hope to return soon :-)

Helios 44M-7 at F2 plus a 2x teleconverter. I have photographed this wooden figurine before. As an object, its nature is trivial and some might call it kitsch. To me, it has its enigmatic fascination. It popped up right at the beginning, when I met the woman who would become my wife. Difficult to put into words what goes on inside. Associations like 'home', 'protection' and 'intimacy' well up. The totally unsubstantiated feeling, you know, that, 'in the end, everything will be alright'. Symbols work this way, signposts to a world that is (eventually) in order.
Kitsch has been having a bad press from the 19th century when the term was invented. The fact is, however, that Kitsch was and still is very popular and that the aesthetics of Kitsch are very much capable of moving people to tears - whatever "high culture" may think of it. It is not aesthetics that worry me. The problem with Kitsch is that the emotional gratification comes at a price, namely by excluding the dilemmas and difficulties of life. What you then end up with is emotion or even beauty without ethics. And that is the problem.
I had created a completely different image for this week's theme (which I've also posted), but when I looked at the 2 next to each other, this one made me smile more. :)
The kitten is a very kitsch plastic brooch from the 1960s. The pink flower came from a plant on my kitchen window sill. No idea what type it is, but it created a nice contrast. :)

I thought about not posting my interior shots at all because it was dark and I had very little time to even focus my camera. Also our guide emphatically locked the doors one after another as we left! Still, even with the noise and blur, the rooms have a wonderful ambiance and I love them and there is the ancient connection of Rožmberk Castle to our family. So! Take the tour if you like with my apologies!

I have photographed these strange figurines before. "Kitsch" they may be, but there is a biographical dimension, too. Anyway, the point here is the lens. The Leitz Elmar 4/135 (ignore exif data) goes back to the early 1960s. Focussing was difficult on a rangefinder camera (here Leica M 246 Monochrome). Using the tiny Olympus electronic viewfinder, the lens can shine again and focussing is easy (here: wide-open).

Funky clock that reminded me of the life growing up in the '60s. We had a similar clock that hung on our kitchen wall. Kitsch ruled then.
