Kimono photos on Flickr

Lately, we see more and more women in Kimono strutting on Kyoto streets than a decade ago. I wonder if it is due to a trend to regard traditional fashion style highly, or simply the rise of businesses by kimono and tourism industries. The kimonos these women are wearing are called furisode. It is distinguished from regular-style kimonos by its long, trailing sleeves. Furisode kimonos are formal attire for young, and often maiden women. Therefore, they are often colourful and draw people’s attention.

My kimono debut... by chris ishikawa

This is my kimono debut.

On 20 May 2000, a women's club in Yokohama (Japan) had a talent luncheon.

I am in the middle (with a couple friends) as one of the "Three Little Maidens" from the "Mikado". With a couple turns (twirls) and a flutter of our fans, we had a fun time with the pantomime of the song for "our part" in the day's entertainment.

Some friends have asked if I have ever worn a kimono. Even though I've lived in Japan for almost 20 years, I really haven't worn a kimono that many times.

Pour faire ses photos souvenir, soit en se plaçant derrière un kimono soit de part et d'autre de la "japonaise" à l'éventail.

LE KIMONO :

Le kimono (着物), vêtement traditionnel japonais, se caractérise par sa forme en T et ses manches longues. Il est souvent fabriqué en soie, en coton ou en polyester et est orné de motifs complexes qui reflètent la culture japonaise. Le kimono est généralement porté lors d'événements spéciaux tels que les cérémonies de thé, les mariages et les festivals. Les premiers kimonos ont été largement influencés par les vêtements traditionnels chinois de la période Tang (Hanfu). Le kimono était de base principalement porté par les nobles de la cour impériale (794-1185).
