One of the many beaches on KI (Kangaroo Island). It was a cold overcast day. The stones, sand, rocks and water made this a nice place to stop for a while. The lichen on the rocks was quite stunning and very vivid.

Kodokuna ki (Japanese for lone tree)

Driving around the north of Hokkaido we spotted this tree in a field sat amidst almost pristine snow just some small fox tracks.

Rather than just march through their land Rohan and I went up to the farm and after quite some time managed to attract the farmer who was working away in his barn with a grinder. Some google translate along the lines of please can we photograph your lovely tree followed by a lovely warm smile on his face and a nod of please do we spent a very enjoyable hour there with no feeling of I should't really be here.

Hope you like the tree and the wee story which hadn't ended as we later found a lady who had crashed her car into a snow and wind barrier which had opened her car roof like a tin opener and missed her by inches a very lucky woman also still smiling as Charlotte Gilliatt helped her from the car.

Just realized I never posted the Ad for my Dream Day item. Geez Louise!

For those who have not seen my previous VAV picture , here is a brief description :

A Vav is a Gujarati word for step well. In ancient India, the step wells were constructed by the kings to counter the water problems in the semi arid regions of Gujarat and Rajasthan. These step wells provided water for drinking, washing and bathing. These are inverted temples where the topmost level/floor is at the ground level and then one goes down multiple levels below to the step well.

Back then the architects used the principles of rain water harvesting to keep the well functional and their knowledge to built such huge structures to withstand the impact of earthquakes.

This particular Vav called the Adalaj ki Vav is a stepwell located in Adalaj village near Ahemdabad and has 5 levels below the ground. It was built in 1498. The way these have been constructed, there is ample sunlight at each level ...

You can read more about Adalaj ki Vav here : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adalaj_Stepwell

Do you think modern world architects need to learn a thing or two from ancient architects ?? planning and respecting nature maybe ??

Rani ki Vav or the Queens stepwell...

Rani ki vav is an intricately constructed stepwell situated in the town of Patan in Gujarat, India. It is located on the banks of River Saraswati. It was built in 11th-century AD by Queen Udaymati as memorial for her husband king Bhimdev I. Stepwells are a distinctive form of subterranean water resource and storage systems in the Indian subcontinent.

Rani ki vav was built as an inverted temple with seven levels of stairs. It has more than 500 principal sculptures and over a 1000 minor ones that combine religious, mythological and secular imagery. The principal sculptures include the Dashavtara (10 incarnations) of Lord Vishnu.

The stepwell was later flooded by the river Saraswati and silted over. It remained hidden from the outside world till as late as the 1940s. In 1940's the excavations carried out under the Baroda State revealed the stepwell. In 1986, a major excavation and restoration was carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). An image of Queen Udayamati was also recovered during the excavation. The restoration was carried out from 1981 to 1987.

It was added to the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites on 22 June 2014.

Built in 1034 AD, flooded and hidden till the 1940's, seen few earthquakes and the structure still stands strong. All that in days of no electricity, no technology and no Google. It is a wonder people. It is a mind blowing place to visit. If you ever get a chance, do visit the place. Highly recommended.

Crailsheim KI

The Gonpa (monastery) at Ki is the largest among the 3 major monasteries of Spiti valley. First established in the 11th century AD, it has been rebuilt and expanded many times and today houses nearly 400 monks.

This is a picture that has been cropped a bit and a fox with AI inserted. Compare it with the previous picture, it's amazing what's possible these days. This is just an example, I hope it won't become a habit here on Flickr to show such pictures as real photos.

Here I would like to show how I generated a photo with artificial intelligence (AI). The photo shows a landscape, with a lake, a sky, a deer and a fox. In the previous picture you can see a goose, here an AI generated fox inserted into the photo. It looks very realistic, but it is not a real photo. It's a work of art created by a computer programme. DGAN is a simple approach that generates high-resolution images conditioned on desired semantic attributes. How did I do this? I used an AI software called Generative Adversarial Network (GAN). A GAN consists of two parts: a generator and a discriminator. The generator tries to create new images that look like real photos. The discriminator tries to distinguish between real and fake images. The two parts learn from each other and constantly improve.

To generate a photo, I have to give the generator some input. For example, I can tell it what kind of landscape I want, what colours I prefer or what mood I want to create. The generator then uses this information to create an image that matches my wishes. The result is a unique and creative photo created just by me and the AI.

I hope you have gained an insight into the fascinating world of AI-generated photos.
