Bryan Wade, an award winning television producer, presented an oral history documentary titled “Keystones: The African American Veterans’ Experience”.
This documentary is the first of a fifteen-part documentary series which chronicles the lives of African American servicemen and women who served from World War II to the Vietnam War. In conjunction with this documentary, Wade created a school curricu-lum, which he said is the first of its kind in the country to teach African American oral history.

“This geologic wonder is one of the most dramatic and easily identified thrust faults to be found in Las Vegas, Nevada.” Thus sayeth the sign at the White Rock parking lot. I’m very partial to qualified statements like these. There must be several thrust faults in Vegas, thurst faults that are dramatic and easily identified. This is only one of them.
So what are you looking at?
The grey rocks are old, and the red/white rocks are young. The thrust fault part of it is that the old rocks are on top of the young rocks.
That’s backwards! How does old stuff get on top of new stuff?
Well, tectonic plates got moved up over each other. The red/white rocks used to be on top of all of the grey rocks, but they eroded of those already. The red/white that lasted was from the old rocks protecting them after the old got thrust over the new. Then the older rocks have also eroded, revealing the younger rocks they covered.

The two-story Victorian style wood-frame structure served as a grade school since it was constructed in 1900 until 1988. It was built with locally-milled lumber by Eli Shomaker and has a landmark position on the hillside over the town.
