On our way down the mountain, taking a break

I spent Memorial Day hiking the Keystone Arch Bridge trail in Middlefield, MA. There are four of these bridges left over the Westfield River of the original ten. This one is imaginatively known as bridge "B". They were constructed between 1837 & 1841 for the purpose of carrying a railroad line through the mountains between Springfield and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. They are quite solid to this day, which is amazing since they are just fitted stone using no steel or mortar to support them. One of them is still used to this day to carry the CSX railroad.

Interestingly, the engineer on the project was the father of James Whistler.

They are quite large, this one is 65 feet high.

Rafter's Harbor Street Bridge: A keystone (a.k.a. capstone) is the wedge-shaped stone piece at the apex of a masonry arch (or the generally round one at the apex of a vault), the final piece placed during construction, locking all the stones into position, allowing the arch (or vault) to bear weight

{On reserve: assigned FRA trip, my 1st FRA as Purser, for which I am not qualified – in addition to doing the work of both Speakers, as no other German speakders were on the crew 02-04JUL2019, Mainz, Germany layover – I flew domestic and international flights as Lead Flight Attendant; however, Lead and Purser are not the same, and to be Purser, you need to be Purser-qualified, unless you are a flight attendant on reserve and get assigned, as I did}

Ruth's Career as a Flight Attendant – Happy Highlights –

The time has come for me to say a certain good-bye. I have decided to accept a Voluntary Early Out Program (VEOP) of the world's largest airline – saving another flight attendant from being cut involuntarily due to the corona virus pandemic – since our Company doesn't need 80% of us now. Upon leaving September 27, 2021, once exited, I turn into a retiree with full retirement benefits. So I worked my last trip March 1-4, 2020, not knowing – the Lord knew – it'd be my last, and very good.

My first flight to Germany, when I was a child, took 2 days, on a Constellation propeller aircraft in 1960 transporting military families like ours, hugging coastlines and stopping every so often along the way to refuel. Four years later, ending my father's tour of duty, I flew back to America on a jet airliner.

In working flights from the early 90's into 2020 I encountered unexpected joys, exceptionally difficult people, and potentially deadly situations; however, on 1 flight a passenger came to the jetbridge boarding door I was working on his hands... because he had no legs; he had to walk into the restroom on his hands, then ate his meals with those same hands. I said to myself that I wouldn't complain about anything ever again.

Never did any flight I was working on cancel; however, during one month of 4 transatlantic Frankfurt trips, the flight from the day before on 3 of my 4 return flights cancelled: we carried their relaxed, rested return (deadheading) crew, who had an extra full day in Germany to enjoy doing whatever they wanted to do, back over the ocean, working the totally filled flights while they sat, ate, and slept in passenger seats, 100% full airplane each time! I wished I also could have had an extra day, too, at least once!

In a quarter century I flew Germany about 1,000 times as Speaker (making the airplane announcements in German), usually once, sometimes twice, occasionally 3 times in a week, even worked – assigned as a reserve – 10 transatlantic flights in 15 days, 5 trips back-to-back non-stop; plus worked other international destinations, also 5 years domestic, mostly 3-day but a few 1-, 2-, or 4-day, and 1 prized 5-day trip. I will have accumulated 29½ yrs. seniority from my 20May1992 hire, acquiring lifetime memories, enjoying amazing friendships. This scenic journey down memory lane highlights my working trips of which I have pictures: 1 in 1994; 2 in 2001; 2 in 2010; after buying a smart phone, 252 the next day 11AUG2012 through 04MAR2020. Enjoy this mere 1% of a total of ~70,000 photos and occasional notes on working trips as a crewmember!

WASHINGTON, DC- 35,000 people from 28 states are converging in the streets to show President Obama the broad public support for climate solutions, while also challenging him to keep his commitment of making climate action a top priority during his second term. The president has several actions that he alone can take, including rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and adopting a strong carbon rule to limit pollution from coal plants.

I spent the 4-6 of the month with my family and family friend in Dillon, Colorado at Keystone Resort for a short vacation! We skied and hung out in the hot tub in our condo for a couple of days. It was a beautiful, nice break from Kansas.

Rotund Lt. Ronny Arce of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department leads his troop of Keystone Cops to fight the bad spectators at King Trump's Inauguration. Moments after this photo was taken Arce returned to his troops. On the way, Arce took a cheap shot and hit me from behind ... moving me a few feet before I caught my balance. The Office of Police Complaints "investigated" Arce's assault on me, and some how concluded no misconduct by Arce. Judging from the looks of these cops, they must do a lot of desk duty which includes donut breaks.

Update: In an effort to understand the OPC's conclusion of no-fault on the part of the cop that assaulted me, I filed a Freedom of Information Act Request with the OPC, requesting the file on my complaint. I was sent my original complaint and the no-fault letter from the OPC. Nothing else! According to OPC legal counsel Alicia J. Yates, providing notes or testimony from the interviews of Arce and his fellow officers would violate their right to privacy. What a system! Of course, I am assuming there was an "investigation". The motto of the MPD must be "trust us".

Update (4/13/17) sent an e-mail to Mayor Bowser complaining of the conclusion and process whereby Lt Arce's assault was cleared without any explanation to me. I informed the Mayor that the experience with Lt. Arce, the MPD and the OPC had left a bad taste in my mouth.

Further update (5/14/17): I returned a phone call from Captain Michelle Ridlehoover of the MPD. Ridlehoover called me in response to my complaint to the Mayor. Ridlehoover is Lt. Arce's superior. She added no new information, nor explanation for the no-fault decision on Arce's assault. She was defensive, and if the purpose of her call was to placate me, she failed.
