Detail of a Law Lord keystone from the Royal Faculty of Procurators' Hall in Nelson Mandela Square. It was not the head but the neatly-striped stonework that first caught my eye. Then I wondered why he should have foliage on his head.

Day two makeover by Scarlett, great!!

Must be day two, my nails are done!

Keystone Wye Bridges between Keystone and Rapid City, in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

An interchange of US 16 and US 16A located in the Black Hills, featuring two unique "glulam" (Glue-laminated) timber bridges. The Keystone Wye is a trumpet-style three-way interchange for the two divided highways, constructed in 1966-67 as part of the project converting US 16 to a four-lane, divided highway from Rapid City, South Dakota to Keystone for visitors to Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The high bridge is supported by three 20-meter wooden, single-hinged arches; six separate glulam pieces are used in the construction. Three more pieces were built but failed quality assurance tests; they were assembled into an interesting pyramidal sculpture which for years was located just off US 16 on the then-south edge of Rapid City (a site today occupied by a motel and convenience store), and which was moved to a new location on US 16 near Sitting Bull Crystal Cave in the mid-1990s.

The name Keystone Wye apparently predates the construction of the modern interchange. Major intersections in the Black Hills are frequently named, whether there are communities at the locations or not. (Wikipedia)

KEYSTONE WV: A retired cruiser reflecting on the old days when it waited diligently for speeders. This car rests along side The Coal Heritage Trail one would presume to get scoff laws to slow down.

NOTE: For those who are young, not fans of movie history, or live outside the USA I have to add a comment about the Keystone Cops. The Keystone Cops was a series of silent film comedies [ca. 1915] about a group of totally incompetent policemen. This series was very simple, silly, ridiculous, but at times, brilliantly funny. This obviously inoperable police cruiser would have fit in perfectly to any one of their hair-brained misadventures.

I am guessing she'll do 86 mph. That's pretty fast on a 130 pound machine.

In the vendor area after a fab makeover by Scarlett! Not bad for a 65 year old! I meant me, not Scarlett.

This Lynchburg, Virginia home, called the Fanny Hughes House in the final nomination form for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), was built ca. 1907 or 1910. It’s a 2 1/2 story brick structure with basement and has a garden and patio at the lower level. I didn’t take any photos from the side, but the building is much larger than the photos show, supposedly with 21 rooms. Depending on the sources online, the home has 5, 6 or 8 baths; it is either 5,260 square feet or 6, 740 square feet—so much for reliable Internet information! The Georgian Revival structure has a tiled gambrel roof (barely visible in the first image) with simple rectangular brackets. A small central front gable with returns marks the central bay of the front facade; to either side is a small 6/1 double hung sash dormer window with pediment. The façade corners are highlighted with quoining of a different color brick. The quoin pattern also divides the central bay from the two flanking bays. Each of these has a single 6/1 double hung sash window on each floor; a flat jack arch and keystone accent the first level windows. Corbelled brick detailing on the façade divides the first and second floors. The central bay contains a fanlight in the gable, below which is a tripartite window. This window has involved molding (image 4) and patterned panes. Below this central window is the entrance, framed by engaged Ionic columns and made colorful by the use of stained-glass (image 5). The transom is a singular stained-glass pane with floral and geometric motifs (image 4). The wooden double doors each have a single vertical stained-glass pane with geometric patterns (images 6 and 8). A 2-story wing to the left is noticeable for its tripartite bay casement windows with tracery (image 3). An iron fence surrounds the lot, the front gate quite elaborate in ornamentation (image 9). At one time shutters may have been on the front façade. The house was for sale several months ago and may still be. The tax assessment was about $300,000. The Fannie Hughes House is listed within the Court House Hill/Downtown Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places August 16, 2001 with reference ID# 01000853. There was a boundary increase of the district (ID# 02001361) which was listed on the NRHP November 22, 2002. As usual I’m grateful to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources for the online posting of NRHP nomination forms.

The Keystone Wye is a laminated wooden bridge in South Dakota's Black Hills. One of the most unique I've seen, and to me, amazing that the structure is wooden.
