Kate Smith and her ensemble from radio days. Smith – known
for singing “When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain” and
“God Bless America” – had a long career in radio: the daily
daytime commentary program Kate Smith Speaks, and weekly
evening variety show, The Kate Smith Hour. Her phenomenal
success at selling war bonds – during 18 hours in 1945, her
marathon effort sold $39 million worth of bonds – made her
the subject of some of the earliest mass media research.
