An der Ostseite des markanten Sellastocks in den Dolomiten befindet sich das sogenannte Vallon-Kar. Die Sellagruppe ist ein plateauförmiger Bergstock, dessen Schichten fast horizontal übereinanderliegen und terrassenartige Absätze bilden. Das Vallon-Kar liegt genau auf einer solchen geologischen "Etage" oberhalb der steilen Außenwände der Sella. Weichere Gesteinsschichten wurden durch Wind und Wasser schneller abgetragen, wodurch ein flacher Felskessel (Kar) entstand, der in der letzten Eiszeit zu seiner endgültigen Form ausgeschliffen wurde.
Über dem Kar erheben sich wandartig die knapp 3.000 Meter hohen Gipfel des Zehner (2.916 Meter), des Boèseekofel (2.913 Meter), der Vallonspitze (2.906 Meter), des Neuner (2.904 Meter) und des Le Punte (2.791 Meter). Auf dem Niveau des Kars liegt zudem die Franz-Kostner-Hütte (Rifugio Franz Kostner al Vallon) auf einer Höhe von 2.536 Metern.

TSO KAR is a salt lake in the southern part of Ladakh (Himalayas), 160km south of Leh, at an altitude of 4,530m.
The mountains surrounding the lake reach 6,000m.
Until a few years ago the lake was an important source of salt, which the Changpa nomads used to export to Tibet.
The climate here is harsh. In winter, temperatures below -40 °C are not uncommon. In summer the temperature rises above 30 °C, with extreme fluctuations during the day. Precipitation in the form of either rain or snow is extremely rare.
An unforgettable journey.
