Winnaar de Keniaan Charles Kamathi (rechts). Hij won in een tijd van 2 uur 7 minuten en 38 seconden en kwam tegelijk over de streep met Nicolas Chelimo Kipkorirwerd. Een fotofinisch wees Kamathi als winnaar aan. Hij had een iets langere grote teen.

Het was Kamathi's vijfde marathon en de eerste die hij won, Tijdens het WK in 2001 won hij goud op de 10.000 meter.

Op deze foto zijn ze bijna halverwege.

Among the seven runners, Haile Gebrselassie is the only one that is hidden behind one of the others (the one in the middle front). You can see his right foot, though, and part of his left. Haile will win this marathon race after another 21 kilometers in world record time (2:03:59). The other two runners behind the pacemen, James Kwambai (2:05:36) and Charles Kamathi (2:07:48), finish second and third.

In an effort to increase the usage of key Los Angeles recreational areas and create collaborations amongst a variety special interest groups, Black surfer and visionary Dedon Kamathi, created the "Pan African Beach Day" events.
