On July 2019, NMR celebrated the 14th anniversary of its induction as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Now, along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, NMR is also part of the heritage ‘Mountain Railways of India’.

NMR has more than a few distinctions. On its 46 km journey, the little blue train climbs from 325 m to 2,240 m, negotiating along the way the steepest gradient of any railway line in South Asia. It does this with its rack and pinion system - it is the only rack railway in India - where cog wheels mesh with a toothed rack rail to ease the climb.

NMR uses one of the world’s oldest engines, 'X' Class steam rack locomotives, manufactured by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterthur in Switzerland, on the rack and pinion section of its tracks.

When this railway was completed in 1908, the last stop was the hill town of Coonoor. The line was later extended to Ooty (Udhagamandalam). It now passes through 13 stations: Mettupalayam, Kallar (now closed for passengers), Adderley, Hillgrove, Runnymede, Katteri, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti, Lovedale, Fernhill and Ooty.

These train journeys offer some of the best experiences as they chug on routes that have been carved through mountains and beautiful valleys.

The train leaves Mettupalayam at 7.10 each morning, switches from a steam to a diesel engine at Coonoor station, and chugs into Ooty at noon. [description Courtesy :- The Hindu News ]

Nilgiri Mountain Railways (NMR) is a popular tourist attraction, this meter-gauge rail is also called as Toy Train.

We lived in this beautiful hill station in northern India for three years from June 2013 to July 2016.We always look back to our happy years there with great nostalgia but our longing to go back was fulfilled only last week after a gap of more than six years. Unfortunately we could spend only a couple of days there but it was a wonderful trip. We tried to visit all our old haunts and caught up with many old friends.

This is a shot from our favourite walk in Shimla. You can see Christchurch ,one of the main landmarks of Shimla dating back to the colonial era, in this image.

Shimla is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh,India. It is situated at an altitude of 7467 feet above sea level in the Himalayas..It served as the summer capital of British India from 1864 to 1947 when India became independent. The British built the Kalka Shimla railway(1898) and started the rail service between Kolkata and Shimla ,more than a 1000 miles apart,to enable the machinery of Government to move from Calcutta to Shimla and back every year.

Yes, this is a railway track which is a World Heritage site recognized by UNESCO.

ps- this is known as a toy train, coz it literally is ! the cabin in each bogie not seating more than 25-30 people and the roof a touch away !

personally, its an experience worth having. just happened to be onboard the train by mere chance.

it travels really slow. the engine getting out of breath while climbing the mountain peaks and then while descending and then again climbing and navigating through the 103 tunnels ! The journey is about 5-6 hrs long for just 100 kms by road ! But, you never really feel this long in the train, thanks to the beautiful vistas along the mountain rail track, which keep on changing every few minutes !

The train from Kalka to Shimla standing in Kaithleeghat station some 15-20 kms from Shimla.

The Kalka_Shimla railway is a narrow gauge railway line connecting Kalka in foothills of the Himalayas to Shimla ,capital of Himachal Pradesh, at a height of around 7116 feet above the sea level.

Shimla became the summer capital of British India in 1864 and was also the headquarters of the British Army. The construction of this (approx 96 km long) railway line commenced in 1898 and was completed in 1903.It was inaugurated by the viceroy Lord Curzon.

There were originally 107 tunnels on this route and 102 are still in operation. The longest tunnel is at Barog.Engineer Col.Barog dug this tunnel from both sides but could not align the meeting and was symbolically fined one Rupee. He could not live with the shame and later committed suicide inside the tunnel.

This railway line is one of the most scenic in India and is a great favourite with tourists travelling to Shimla.

Shivalik Deluxe Express- Shimla to Kalka

The historic UNESCO World Heritage Kalka-Shimla, 52456, the Himalayan Queen toy train takes one back in time. Built by the British in 1903 to provide access to the summer capital of Shimla, it provides one of the most scenic train journeys in India. It enlivens passengers as it gradually winds its way steeply upwards along the narrow track, through rugged mountains and pine forests.

This train runs on narrow gauge track from Kalka to Shimla. The previous connecting train has the same name and starts from Delhi.

Anıların sireni sarsar seni

Bir kopuş duyguların birbirinden ayrışmasını izlersin o an
