The mighty peak of Nilgiri South (6,839 m) towers above the Kali Gandaki gorge in western Nepal, huge banner clouds indicating hurricane force winds high on the mountain. This photograph was captured from the small village of Tatopani, nestled in the warm and green southern end of the gorge, where locals and travellers alike enjoy the warm hot springs and incredible views of the Himalayan foothills.

Auf den ersten Blick sieht der "Monte Kali" wie ein gewöhnlicher Berg aus. Doch die Erhebung nahe des osthessischen Städtchens Heringen ist eine Abraumhalde aus Überresten der Kalisalzproduktion. Dennoch zieht der höchste Kali-Berg Deutschlands zahlreiche Besucher an. Das Heringer Wahrzeichen ist ein Nebenprodukt des Kalibergbaus. Der prägt die Region seit mehr als 100 Jahren. Dabei bauen die Bergarbeiter auch Rohsalze ab, die sich nicht zu verkaufsfähigen Produkten veredeln lassen. Diese landen dann auf dem Berg. Inzwischen besteht die künstlich geschaffene Erhebung aus 188 Millionen Tonnen Salz. Und wächst weiter: Bei Betrieb kommen stündlich 900 Tonnen hinzu.

Einheimische nennen den Salzberg scherzhaft "Kalimandscharo". Der Berg ist nicht nur aus der Ferne ein beliebtes Fotomotiv. Mehr als 10.000 Besucher klettern jährlich hinauf und werden für ihre Mühe mit toller Aussicht belohnt. An klaren Tagen reicht der Blick weit in die Rhön, den Thüringer Wald und das Nordhessische Bergland mit dem Hohen Meißner.

After taking the previous photos, I headed back to the valley, where I took up position behind the supermarket and enjoyed part two of breakfast. I didn't have to wait long for the North-South freight trains to cross central Germany.

After this photo, I slowly made my way to the station to continue my journey. I had taken two weeks off to travel... even though there was a lot of work waiting in my studio, but sometimes I have to get away from there too.
