A juniper bush in a near-desert of volcanic sands and lava in W-Iceland. The common juniper is a small coniferous tree or shrub in the cypress family. It has the largest geographical range of any woody plant, with a circumpolar distribution throughout the Northern Hemisphere, from the Arctic to temperate zones. It can reach up to 10 m height, but in Iceland it hardly grows over 1 m high, and is most usually sprawling on the ground, like here. In Iceland it was used for tea, and for Christmas trees, and the berries were thought to be a cure for various diseases.
This is a piece not for sale but I will show it...…..some of these stones/fossils are an inspiration for me…..the pattern you find in sea-urchins and other fossils.....the holes and other patterns....these are just some examples of inspiration from nature....but I like them and find them very decorative and they are easy to bring along….but There are so many things in nature that is an inspiration...the trees, the bark, the plants, grass, birds, feathers, eggs, leaves, and lots more.....

In drier areas, juniper pollen easily becomes airborne and can be inhaled into the lungs.
In stark beweideten Gebieten ist Wacholder aufgrund seiner Unverträglichkeit für Weidetiere oft der einzige vorkommende Baum.
Steingrund ist kein Hindernis für den Wacholder
Nahezu alle Arten sind gut an regenarme Zeiten angepasst. In Bergregionen sind es häufig Wacholder-Arten, die noch an der Baumgrenze gedeihen.
Wacholder (Juniperus) bedeutet „(zu) früh gebärend, abortierend“

Er kann bis zu 600 Jahre alt werden. Der Stamm besitzt eine grau- bis rotbraune Borke.
Die Nadeln sind scharf zugespitzt (Fraßschutz, Kondensationspunkt für Regenwasser, Trockenheitsanpassung). Er ist ein Tiefwurzler mit Wurzelpilz.
Die häufigere der beiden Wacholder-Arten in Deutschland, der Heide-Wacholder, war der Baum des Jahres 2002.
Von der Bezeichnung Kranewitt leiten sich die Familiennamen Kranewitter, Kranebitter, Kronawitter, Kranevitter und Granovetter ab.

Gin (von französisch genévrier ‚Wacholder‘) ist eine meist farblose Spirituose mit Wacholder (Wacholderschnaps) und Hauptbestandteil vieler Cocktails, wie des Martini, des Negroni und des Longdrinks Gin Tonic.

Die Beeren werden in zerstoßenem Zustand den Pökelmischungen beigegeben, sowohl in die Salzmischungen als auch in wässrige Pökellake.
In alten Rezepten findet man Angaben wie diese: 8–12 Wacholderbeeren je Kilogramm Speck oder Schinken.
Kein Schwarzwälder Speck ohne Wacholder!
Wenige Zweige werden auf das Sägemehl beim Räuchern oben drauf gegeben.
Der Geschmack der Wacholder-Beere fördert die geschmackliche Entwicklung beim Räuchern von Fleisch oder Fisch.
Auch das Holz des Wacholder-Strauches wird in Form von Spänen zu den üblichen Räuchermehlen gegeben, um eine Aromatisierung über den Rauch zu erreichen.
In alten Rezepten findet man häufig, man solle Kranewitt-Zweige (Wacholderzweige) zur Räucherglut beigeben, um den Geschmack zu verbessern.

Pharmakologische Wirkung: Bei Überdosierung werden die Nieren gereizt. Beeren und Juniperus-Präparate dürfen in der Schwangerschaft nicht eingenommen werden, da sie antifertile Eigenschaften besitzen.
Achtung: Wacholder-Präparate sind bei Nierenerkrankungen und während der Schwangerschaft kontraindiziert!

Juniper Berries
A juniper berry is the female seed cone produced by the various species of junipers. It is not a true berry but a cone with unusually fleshy and merged scales, which give it a berry-like appearance.
Berries of the Juniperus Communis are used to flavour the Dutch liquor 'Jenever'.
Juniper berries are also used to flavour meat dishes and sauerkraut.
