Juniperus horizontalis or creeping juniper is a small evergreen ground cover shrub native to North America. It has an arched and drooping posture and forms large densely branched spots. They are dioecious plants, that is, there are male and female junipers; the female specimens produce small blackish berries, which contain some seeds; male specimens produce yellowish pine cones.

This Sierra Western Juniper thrives in the Hot Creek Geologic Site in the Inyo National Forest, Mono County. The blue "berries" are actually cones; it would be tempting to try making gin from them, although a different variety, Juniperus communis, is typically used.

Happy Fence Friday! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

Juniperus communis doesn't grow fast. I don't guess how long it takes before they get this big.

Juniperus brevifolia, a juniper species endemic to the Azores, grows near Lagoa do Capitão on the island of Pico. This juniper is endangered due to habitat loss throughout the archipelago. At Lagoa do Capitão, the tree's twisted, branching form adds a magical atmosphere to area around the lake. The small, shallow lake fills a sag along a northwest-southeast trending fault in the São Roque-Piedade Volcanic Complex on Pico's eastern end.

A Utah Juniper (Juniperus osteosperma) clings to rock and life with grace surrounded by the Fisher Towers. Cottontail (l) and Echo (r) towers frame Kingfisher tower (middle) rising up behind them, with the base of the Titan on the upper right side of the photo. The towers are popular with climbers, and most routes have bolts installed to protect climbers and rock.

I took this with a Zeiss Loxia 21 mm f2.8 that I got primarily for night shots, but I've found it is tack sharp for any subject and great for certain landscape shots. I thought I would need to focus stack here, but was happy with the f16 version.

Juniperus communis is a constant species of pine stands in the southern Moscow region. Its populations are very sparse: individuals are mostly separated one from another with hundreds of meters. The species is rather damaged due to the intensity of ontogenesis (very slow one), grassroots fires and sporadic cuttings

Chrissi island is also known as Gaidouronisi (donkey island) to locals and attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to enjoy its tropical waters and the shade of the extraordinary juniper trees. In fact, the island is home to one of the most important juniper forests (sp. Juniperus macrocarpa) in Greece, covering an area of about 350 acres, as well as to a rare ecosystem of marine life, and for this reason it is a protected area of natural beauty. Collecting shells or sand is strictly prohibited, as well as walking outside the designated paths and camping, activities that greatly endanger the fragile juniper trees.

Tom Buys, one of the highly knowledgeable gardeners of the Hortus Botanicus, this morning took me around to the evergreen section to show me this Pear Rust. In the gloomy days and the shade I hadn't noticed it before and he himself had only just discovered it too. In fact, on the way over we stopped by a Pear Tree, not a hundred metres away to see if its leaves might have been infected. But no(t yet), it seems.

This fungus or rust is here thriving - already a bit dessicated - on Juniperus sabina, Savin Juniper. Juniper is its winter host, and Pear its Summer home. After a wet spell, the spores in the bark of the Juniper will grow out to these orange nodes and they in turn will release spores which will settle on Pear leaves as their secondary host. In fact, those spores are not able to reinfect our Juniper and need to cross over into the world of a Pear Orchard for continued life.
