The Remington 12: Journalism’s Workhorse of the 1920s
In the dimly lit Toronto Star newsroom of the 1920s, the Remington 12 desktop typewriter reigned supreme. Heavy, durable, and reliable, its black steel frame and crisp keystrokes matched the relentless pace of the paper’s growing reputation. Editors barked orders, reporters clattered away, and stories of the city’s triumphs and tragedies took form on its smooth, ivory keys. The Remington 12 was a workhorse, built to endure long hours and harsh deadlines. These typewriters churned out countless headlines, from political scandals to world wars, bridging the gap between breaking news and the readers eagerly waiting on Toronto’s streets. For the Star, the Remington 12 wasn’t just a machine; it was the heartbeat of the newsroom, a silent partner in its mission to inform and inspire.

Late Autumn afternoon air began to cool quickly as I noticed this set of three clouds pass over me! Much like wave travel by a surfer waiting for that perfect wave!
In honor of Alex Pretti, Registered Nurse. Mr. Pretti was protesting in Minneapolis and was ganged up on by 5 or more ice agents. They eventually shot him and he died from his wounds. How can journalism remain neutral in these times?
I spent part of my lunchtime w/this man today. He's a recent double major from Denver, 24 years old & part of a freight train-hopping crew called the Wrong Way Kids. His crew calls him Shitty & he answers. That's his name. He was so nice & intense.
The tattoo is only one night's sleep old. A newborn. He said it "hurt like absolute hell," but that the mushrooms he was eating took the edge off a bit. His friend did the inking while smoking crack! Serious.
These folks were kicking out of the city tonite, on a freighter to San Jose & down into central California. They planned to drink a box of wine on the way.
I am a very boring person. These are modern American shamans (college-educated!).

Citizen journalism is needed when large swaths of mainstream media pledge craven fealty to a fascist regime.

⚑ "No Kings protests took place on October 18, 2025, as part of a series of demonstrations against Donald Trump's policies and actions during his second presidency. The demonstrations, which followed the June 2025 No Kings protests, took place in some 2,700 locations across the country, including the National Mall in Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York City, [and Atlanta].
Approximately 200 organizations collaborated to coordinate the October protests, which drew nearly 7 million participants nationwide, marking it as one of the largest single-day demonstrations in American history."

My Dad is an engineer, really good at planning. The first three kids were born with perfect spacing--precisely 2 years, 8 months and 4 days apart. Then an unexpected reaction to a prescription boosted Mom's fertility, and an unplanned fourth kid came along--"little Robin", ten years younger than myself.
While in the womb, we jokingly referred to her as "Roscoe" (a character on "77 Sunset Strip"). She may have been the result of a busted plan, but she was everyone's favorite family member.
Now--Mom's a little under the weather, and Robin's presence seems like the master gambit in an inspired strategy: why not have an Emergency Room nurse daughter live around the corner in your Golden Years?
Better yet, add the Physician Assistant daughter just down the road. And the icing on the cake?--keep the journalism siblings about a 100 miles north up the freeway.
It's a wonderful irony when the unplanned youngster child is the glue that holds the family together. When I phone and talk to the folks these days, I always end up asking, "well, has Robin dropped by yet today?"
"Oh yes," Mom replies, "what would we do without her?" Indeed. Sometimes the best laid plans go awry, to the benefit of all. Deal!

Junction of Penn Street and Broadmead, outside of entrance to Cabot Circus, Bristol, South West of England, United Kingdom, on Saturday 9th of July 2022.
About this photograph.
The Bristol Pride parade was marching northwards up Penn Street, and I was walking alongside, taking documentary and journalism kind of photos of the march.
By this point, I reached the entrance to Cabot Circus, across from Broadmead, and stayed there for a moment, looking for any shots to take.
At the junction of Broadmead and Penn Street, on the other side of the road from Cabot Circus (which would be behind me).
This lady is holding up a Christian signs that reads ”Made in the image of God.”
I figured to try and get some shots, in case they may make good documentary photos.
In this part of the area, there were a handful of Christians or other people who believes in different religions, and they were there as the Pride parade marched through.
It’s possible that some of them have different options on the Christian views of the LGBT ways, it’s hard for me to tell which of them supports or against the LGBT.
About the event.
Bristol Pride is an annual festival held over couple of weeks, promoting equality for the various LGBT+ people, with a march through the city at a weekend.
The Bristol Pride started life in 1977 as a fundraiser for the local LGBT community, and evolved into an annual event held every year. There was a gap of only some years between 1994 to 2010 when it was restarted.
The 2022 march started at Castle Park, near Castle Street. The route took them past Cabot Circus, and went around the major shopping area by using The Horsefair and Union Street, and as they went down Union Street, they headed towards Castle Park. When they reached Castle Park, they turned into Wine Street, went into High Street, and into Baldwin Street, headed towards the A38 which is Anchor Road. This route took them into Canon’s Road, and ended up near the Bristol Aquarium.
The march was said to take about an hour, but as a photographer whom would go back and forth, up and down the line, looking for good shots, it took me at least a couple of hours to complete the route.
After the march, those whom bought tickets, can attend an evening musical festival at The Downs, approximately to the north-west of city centre. I did not attend this event, and by the time I got back to my friend’s home, I was worn out from the heat.

In the run up to International Women's Day, Channel 4's International Editor, Lindsey Hilsum, asks women reporters with roots in the Arab world how women are changing the face of war reporting. As a founder of The Marie Colvin Journalists' Circle which was launched in February of this year, Hilsum is part of a network mentoring young women journalists in the Middle East. What draws them to the frontline?
She was joined by BBC journalist Yalda Hakim, documentary filmmaker Safa Al Ahmad, current affairs journalist Mina Al Oraibi, and Lebanese journalist and senior lecturer in international journalism at City University, Dr Zahera Harb.
Today's wars are fought with disinformation as well as with physical weapons. The first line of defense is journalism. My own Ukraine cash donations are going to RSF - Reporters sans frontières/Reporters Without Borders. If you agree and are able to help, please donate: donate.rsf.org/b/my-donation?cid=32&_cv=1
Here's one story, sent to its members by RSF today, about why it matters. Warning: it's gruesome. But so is war, and if this gives offense, don't read it.
Fixer tortured for 9 days by Russian soldiers in Ukraine
“Tortured with a knife and electric shocks, beaten repeatedly with rifle butts in the face and body, subjected to a mock execution, and left without food for 48 hours... ... Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has revealed the shocking story of a 32-year-old Radio France fixer and interpreter who was kidnapped and tortured by Russian soldiers in a village in central Ukraine. Nine days of horror that confirm the intensity of the war crimes being committed by the Russia army against journalists.

“On 5 March, Nikita was ambushed by a Russian reconnaissance unit on the edge of a roadside forest while driving with a “Press” sign displayed on the front of the car. He recounts his car was hit by between 30 and 40 shots fired with automatic weapons. After the soldiers took him to a house, he told them he was a fixer and interpreter for foreign journalists, but they hit him repeatedly with automatic rifle butts, in the face and body. Nikita felt pieces of teeth in his mouth and coughed up blood. The soldiers threw him into a ditch, beside a dead dog, and subjected him to a mock execution. A soldier pretended that he wanted to check that his gun was working and fired a shot that grazed Nikita's head. The soldiers then took him to their camp in the forest about ten minutes' walk away. They tied him to a tree, stole his wedding ring, and removed his shoes. That afternoon, the soldiers beat him again with rifle butts and steel bars on his legs. He lost consciousness several times.... mailchi.mp/rsf.org/fixer-tortured-by-russian-soldiers?e=7...
