John Frederick Collins (July 20, 1919 – November 23, 1995) was the mayor of Boston, Massachusetts, United States from 1960 to 1968. John Collins was born in Roxbury, Boston on July 20, 1919 to an Irish-Catholic family. His father, Frederick "Skeets" Collins, worked as a mechanic for the Boston Elevated Railway. Collins graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School, a public school in Boston, and in 1941 he graduated from Suffolk University Law School. He served a tour in the Army Counterintelligence Corps during World War II, rising in rank from private to captain. In 1946, Collins married Mary Patricia Cunniff, a legal secretary, who Collins had met through his work as an attorney. She would later campaign for Collins when he was incapacitated by polio. The couple had four children.

Boston City Hall is the seat of city government of Boston, Massachusetts. It includes the offices of the mayor of Boston and the Boston City Council. The current hall was built in 1968 to assume the functions of the Old City Hall, and is a controversial and prominent example of the brutalist architectural style. It was designed by Kallmann McKinnell & Knowles (architects) with Campbell, Aldrich & Nulty (architects) and Lemessurier Associates (engineers). Together with the surrounding plaza, City Hall is part of the Government Center complex, a major urban redesign effort in the 1960's. Most modern opinions of the building are negative, often calling it one of the world's ugliest buildings. A 1976 poll of architects, historians and critics conducted by the American Institute of Architects, however, listed the Boston City Hall with Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia campus and Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater as one of the ten proudest achievements of American architecture in the nation's first two hundred years.

Boston is the capital city and most populous municipality of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. It is also the seat of Suffolk County, although the county government was disbanded on July 1, 1999. The city proper covers 48 square miles with an estimated population of 673,184 in 2016, making it the largest city in New England and the 22nd most populous city in the United States. The city is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area known as Greater Boston, a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) home to a census-estimated 4.8 million people in 2016 and ranking as the tenth-largest such area in the country. Alternately, as a combined statistical area (CSA), this wider commuting region is home to some 8.2 million people, making it the sixth-largest in the United States. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United States, founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Upon U.S. independence from Great Britain, it continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub as well as a center for education and culture. The city has expanded beyond the original peninsula through land reclamation and municipal annexation. Its rich history attracts many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone drawing more than 20 million visitors per year. Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public school (Boston Latin School, 1635), first subway system (Tremont Street Subway, 1897), and first public park (Boston Common, 1634). The Boston area's many colleges and universities make it an international center of higher education, including law, medicine, engineering, and business, and the city is considered to be a world leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, with nearly 2,000 start-ups. Boston's economic base also includes finance, professional and business services, biotechnology, information technology, and government activities. Households in the city claim the highest average rate of philanthropy in the United States; businesses and institutions rank among the top in the country for environmental sustainability and investment. The city has one of the highest costs of living in the United States as it has undergone gentrification, though it remains high on world livability rankings.

Following on from Sir Isaac Newton's letter yesterday, here’s the envelope, in his own hand – and don’t you just love the address: ‘To his Honoured Friend Mr John Collins at Mr William Austins house over against the Adam & Eve in Petty France in Westminster London’.

More than 350 years later, you can see why postcodes became quite useful, can’t you…?

Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1727) was a polymath, mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, author and inventor – but, just like the rest of us mere mortals, he could also get pretty hacked off by the postal service.

In this letter dated October 1672, he writes ‘About a month or five weeks since I sent you an answer to your last, accompanied with a little drought of Problems about the construction of Aquations. Not having heard from you since it makes me a little suspicious whether they came to your hands. I should be glad to heare they did, for I would not willingly have them lost.’

This letter, about scientific measurements, was sent by Newton to the mathematician John Collins, and was acquired by Cambridge University Library in 2000 with the help of a grant from the Friends of the Nations' Libraries (FNL). I was fortunate to have this close-up view thanks to an event hosted by the FNL for its members. Seeing and reading someone’s handwriting, particularly when they are internationally and historically renowned, is (for me, at least) a very special experience.
