After the euphoria of leaving* my doctoral studies because "I know what I really want to do and it is the job I was doing prior to this!", I have had almost 8 months of job searching, applying, interviewing and networking. I've applied to universities, publishing firms and public institutions. I've emailed every contact person ever listed to introduce myself and follow up and follow up again.

I have rewritten my resume about 50 times, have made sure that my cover letter says that THIS job is "exactly what I am destined to do and have been looking for!" (despite the job) and have convinced myself of the same.

So, when the perfect position came up in the branch .33 miles from my house, I did all those things listed above and actually meant them. I scored an interview and was cautiously optimistic. I had all the expected nerves and did a good interview. I had answers to their questions; I had them smiling and laughing.

I was VERY patient for 2 1/2 months while the bureaucracy made its decisions.

I got a call today that they hired someone else. Due to budgetary constraints (frickin frakin economy - only 6 days and 13 hours to go god help us all), they didn't hire for all 3 open positions - only 1. And I was not their top candidate.

Ok. That sucks. But the woman who broke this news repeated it 4-5 times. And told me that they didn't consider me a good fit for a different opening that they had - one I didn't even apply for (because it was never posted). Nice. Now I'm being rejected for jobs that technically don't exist. That's a new twist.

And all this time I have been paying through the nose for stop-gap insurance for my family and squeaking by thanks to my beyond generous parents.

I have absolutely no idea what I am supposed to do now.

*poor deluded fool. She looks so happy.

Today's random fact: Turns out that the "backup guy" that I have been keeping in reserve for the past 25 years, you know, just in case something happens and I end up single.....is now a priest.

god dammit.
