We got our heaviest snowfall of the season on the day and night of New Year's Eve. It was one of those wet snows that coated everything. I awoke to scenes like this. Wishing you all a happy January and a happy 2019.

After a day of freezing fog, the setting sun created glowing colours to light up the sky and landscape. An ash tree stands sentinel on the Iron Age ramparts overlooking Witcombe Valley and outlined against the evening sky.

It's true I do actually go out on some of the warmer winter days....

This is the first time I have been out this year (having been recovering from a broken toe!), but I was rewarded with some great looking clouds lit up during the golden hour. This is a 6 shot panorama.

The Big Wheel. Nanaimo, BC.

I've learned more about this area and the mysterious wheel...

This property has an industrial history. It's been a concrete plant, a pile driving/barge manufacturing plant and a storage lot for a company that built docking structures.

The Big Wheel is a remnant of a docking structure called a dolphin. If you look at many BC Ferries terminals you’ll see these wheels turned on their side. The wheels are the frame to hold concrete and timbers. These dolphins help hold ferries in place at dock while they load and unload vehicles.

Strange glimpses of sunshine through the clouds in several places, and with light from the sea.
