Portrait of Jake an American Pit Bull Terrier. This was the first time I used a reflector for a shot and I think it turned out beautifully. I lined up the shot with the sun behind Jake creating a nice backlight. I then had my brother stand behind me using the gold side of my reflector to cast a nice warm glow down onto Jake's face, this also created great catchlights in his eyes. I'm impressed this shot turned out exactly as I envisioned it in my head before taking it, and that doesn't always happen for me.

Playing with camera settings to see if I can get these two in focus while they run. Sparky is the intense one with the bumper. Jake is the one with the flying ears...he is still a pup.

Jake had just been beaten pretty badly before I met him. It's part of the cold reality of life on the streets for the homeless youth in Hollywood. He looked to have a broken nose, a black eye, a split lip, numerous cuts and bruises, and maybe even a broken cheek bone.

This is our scaredy-cat Jake wishing you a Happy New Year. (The black smudge on the left is Bug trying to get in the picture too.)

Jake jumped down off the stool pretty soon after! Btw, the pink behind him is a pillow in the shape of lips…. giggling

It's a bit more sever processing than i'd usually do but I felt uping the contrast and clarity just added to the feeling of incident with the breaks on rather than it flowing with speed... do you think that works?

Jake was out on the grass, in the sun looking for brother bailey. About to pounce on him!

Oldie but goldie. Some toys you never get bored with and Jake is one of them. He was my very first action figure and despite him coming from the basic line (read: cheap) I invariably consider him to be one of the best releases by Hot Toys ever.

Some might notice that I have deleted the last two images I had posted of Jake, with the Peeps. Evidently, I offended a couple of contacts, so I took them off my feed. I thought a long time about it, and nearly deleted my entire Flickr account.....and I may still do so.

This series of Jake has nothing to do with Halloween. It was something I thought about doing last year, but because of my injury, I never got a chance to carry on with it. The fact it is a skeleton is not a comment on what is happening in the World. If anyone thinks it is, then don’t follow me, because you obviously know nothing about me.

If I have other things to post, I will post them, but for the next couple of days, I’m gonna do some yoga with Jake.

The bossman and the end of this series. When it comes to Blue Moon Camera, Jake really is the alpha and the omega. Very camera-smart, passionate about photography and opinionated. One of those guys you will either love or hate, but most people love him. He really is not anti-digital, that is a common misconception, nor is he a luddite (he is about to be featured on Plates to Pixels, an all on-line photo gallery, and hence in an all digital format). But yeah, Jake really is the man with a plan, or at least if not a plan, then definitely a vision. So if you appreciate Blue Moon Camera and everything or anything that it is, then this is the guy to thank.

'JAKE & EMMA' - 'WHITBY GOTH WEEKEND' - 2nd NOVEMBER 2024

San Francisco, California

September 11, 2010

I met Jake just over a year ago when I was working at the Santa Fe Photographic Workshops and he was in one of the workshops. He was able to stop in San Francisco on his road trip across part of the country and we spent the day walking around talking photography and photographing San Francisco. Jake is an inspirational photographer - you know, one of those people you kind of want to hate because they are so young and so talented? You can see his work on his site and see the images from our day walking around the city together on his blog.

Avatar's Navi-Jake. I've tried to do a more accurate photoshoped version of the first released poster. The mirrored photoshoped version of the first poster that everyone have done by themselves to get a glimps of Jake's Avatar doesn't look accurate as the head is not cut right from the center of his face and on top of that the face is slightly tilted. Check it out at the largest resolution. (You need to sign into Flickr! It's free.)

Jake and P at Battersea Park.

We met each other bicycling in opposite directions on the Lakeshore Bike Path in Toronto’s The Beaches. We paused to reflect on what a nice fall day it was and a friendly chat ensued. Soon I was telling him about my photo project and punctuated the story by saying “You will soon understand why I’m telling you about my Human Family photo project.” He gave a knowing smile, indicating that the saw it coming. When I asked his permission to photograph him he didn’t hesitate so I thanked him and gave him my card. Meet Jake.

We were in the shade at the top of an incline and I proceeded to take the photos right there on the bike path. I learned that Jake is just a year younger than I am. He said he would soon be my age. He is 72. Born in the Netherlands, Jake came to Canada with his family when he was just four, so it was a post-war immigration. When I asked what his occupation had been he indicated that there was more than one answer to the question but the one he shared was that he worked for a large bakery franchisor. My ears perked up. “I love baked goods” I told him. I asked if he was a baker and he said “Not really. I can bake my own bread but my main function was administrative and training staff.” I told him I also bake bread and just baked three loaves two days ago. I love the magical transformation of simple ingredients into a loaf of bread.

I asked if he biked this path often and he said he just decided to get the old bike out of storage a couple of weeks ago and his intention is to ride most days if the weather permits.

When I asked what his advice to his younger self would be he said “Oh boy. Well, I guess it would be to just be myself. I would have told my parents I wanted to chart my own course in life far sooner than I did.”

Jake’s message to the project: “Protect the environment before it’s too late.”

Jake struck me as a soft-spoken, thoughtful, and friendly man. He reminded me of a friend from my cycling club who has the same positive qualities. We parted with a friendly handshake. I hope our paths cross again on the Lakeshore Bike Path.

Follow-up:

I received a nice email from Jake reflecting on our chance meeting and answering my question of what prompted him to start cycling at this point in his life. A recent move took him away from his hilly surroundings and provided him with some nice, level terrain along Lake Ontario. He said he's not much good for hills but does well on the level.
