…Amelia,

It was just a false alarm."

Joni Mitchell's Hejira album was the first time I'd heard the cosmic sounds of the late Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass. Later I obsessively watched Joni's Shadows and Light tour DVD for weeks. Jaco joins her along with Michael Brecker on sax (also deceased), Pat Metheny and Don Alias -- a concert tour for all. especially musicians to fall deeply and hopelessly in love.

The Fretless Bass of Jaco in 1986

Bob Bobbing over on the jacopastorius.net forum has confirmed the authenticity of these photos (Mr Bobbing was a close friend of Jaco's and was responsible for putting together the early years CD).

Miles Davis…

it gets no better…

and i was lucky enough while hanging out with Carlos Santana to have caught miles twice, once going back stage at the Paramount in Oakland…

kinda ironic that Jaco Pastorius succumbed to injuries obtained from a bouncer at a night club in Florida after being ejected from a Santana show for attempting to sneak onstage…

funny chit chat between Miles & Marcus Miller, who wrote the song…

Has been shot on color slide film and then I photographed the projected slide on Ilford HP5. These days I may also find the slides and will scan them too. ;-)

Bought the Double LP 11.9.1986 in Stockholm 144 Kr

One of my last LPs I bought in 1986, and this one in Stockholm, Sweden. Haven't found it in Finland.

Weather Report live performances from all around the world. Most of the songs are were from their previous LPs. The band was the best they ever had. Pastorius is still in the bass. He's got a wonderful solo: Slang! - A bit nostalgic to listen all these wonderful performances.

I saw Weather Report once live in Helsinki and Zawinul's band once too.

LP bought in 1978

So many classics on this album: Punk Jazz, Mr. Gone, River People, Young and fine...

... but this is the famous "one-star" rated record by Down Beat at the time!

The album opens with Zawinul's composition: The Pursuit which has cool synth. sounds, medium tempo groove, African style singing - great mood! Shorter's Elders - the mood is a bit sad and dreamy...

Shorter's Pinocchio is already in Miles Davis record Nefertiti in 1967 - this is interesting to hear a new version of the old song.

Fender Jazz Bass Jaco Pastorius. Heavy relic from the boys at the Fender Custom Shop. Epoxy coating....nice job!

"Shadows & Light" is one of my favourite music videos. I first saw Pat Metheny in this about 1980. Favourite from then on.

Two members of Joni's great band in 1979 are no longer with us.

Michael Brecker - top US saxophonist died of leukaemia.

Jaco Pastorius - most unique bass player, was murdered in a street brawl, it appears.

YouTube can't allow us in UK links to tracks from Shadows and Light just now.

I saw his band in Edinburgh in 1989 and 1995.

Slang / Jaco Pastorius

Jam in "C" exercice for two bass / Jaco pastorius

Me dejó conmocionado.

Créeme, estaba esperando reírme a carcajadas. Me senté a escucharle.

Project: Portrait of Jaco, the early years box set, featuring previously unheard recordings of Jaco Pastorius.

Role: I designed and produced the packaging for this project.

The Fender Custom Shop Jaco Fretless (on the right) offers a unique comparative view of what the Bass of Doom originally looked like.

Look at the lacquer, nitro finish and aged sunburst.

The Headstock with some cool patina on the tuners.

The ebony/maple veneer that holds together the splintered headstock is visible, along with Kevin Kaufman's inscription identifying where and when he and Jim Hamilton rebuilt the Bass of Doom for Jaco.

The most obvious difference in the Bass of Doom as it appears today is the figured-maple top and back veneer, the underlying original body having been broken into pieces and re-glued.
