Who's pushing their data to 'the cloud'?
"... Just ordered a new laptop and I've decided to try to push as much of my data online as I can to make life more flexible. I'm just curious to see who here does this and what do you use if so? ..."
WHY
I do. Any post I make I have squared away. This allows me to make my site the definitive collection of my data. It also allows google to index it. I have control over my own content and if for some reason a third party site wants to exert control I still have my stuff. Unlike slashdot who didn't allow any tools to save posts. Hence I lost from about 1996 to 2002's worth of comments. [0]
HOW
There are 2 ways of looking at this. You can either generate you "stuff" from a single point [0] at your machine, save it and pump it out OR use the web apps as clients and suck the data back via RSS, Atom, JSON etc.
I've been doing a bit of both. Pushing stuff from my blog engine after I've cached it and now I'm beginning to suck up the various websites I frequent. So for pushing out I have:
* OUT: flickr (blog, tags, images) , twitter (snippets), hackerid (hackernews data), links (various links I save including links to hackernews & export to delicious)
* IN: hackernews (all posts every 15m, friends),
* IN TODO: wordy (words I use), spock (tags), colourlovers (colours), librarything (my library), amazon (new books), lastfm (what I'm currently listening to), delicious (new links I find), twitter (friends), flickr (friends, processed images, text, tags)
Now as you can see that's a lot of data. Some of the things I'm finding:
* It's easier to push than pull if you want an accurate copy because you save before you export
* pulling data means you don't have to write firstly the interface to capture the data and simply call RSS
* not every site has an API or good RSS feed
* Linking data together is not easy except by time though you could try to match by friend (ie: friend is on twitter, flickr, hackernews)
* displaying the data effectively is difficult simply because of the volume and complexity of it. A good example of how to do this is http://friendfeed.com Clear, simple and pretty much allows for good reading.
I'm now at a stumbling block with a templating engine I'm using and so I'm pretty keen to just extract the data as Atom, RSS and JSON as individual feeds or a mashed feed by date and write a Javascript based website to avoid having to deal with heavy weight blog engines. Let the data go free and see how people use it.
The key thing to realise is when you are compiling your data timestamp it at DB level (if you are using one) ISO1606 format, maybe add a tag layer over the top so you can get the benefit of tagging across data layers.
It's turning out to be an interesting project.
Some time later ...
"... I've heard of ISO 8601 timestamps but never 1606 (and neither has google it seems). What is that? ..."
You are dead right. I was wrong. I meant "ISO 8601". Late night post and I should have checked ~ http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3339.txt
Some time later ...
"... From this RFC I learned that: ..."
The bit I use is a bastardisation of "1985-04-12T23:20:50.52Z". A shorter version as a string, say "20070202T1422" stripping out the hyphens, colons and Zulu.
And the another reply ...
"... Actually I don't believe "20070202T1422" is a legal 8601 timestamp ..."
20070202T1422 - but close enough for me in 1 timezone and limited space for display. I have a double use as both a (8601 hack) and as a human readable title. Adding extra "-" and "Z" makes it harder to read and the accuracy for seconds is simply not required. Trade-offs I'm willing to make.
Prat.

using a live feed of bus GPS positions to visualise choke points in the Edinburgh bus network.
The white and yellow hotspots show where buses spent the most time.
This is usually down to clusters of bus stops. Edinburgh has two large malls very close together. I'm guessing that this accounts for the usual gridlock at the Balmoral.
Darker colours mean either a lower volume of buses, or faster moving buses.
There doesn't seem to be much of an effect where the buses and trams share a route.. This was a problem when the trams started, but it looks as if buses and trams have reached a truce :)
Hotspots :
- outside Princes Mall and the Apple Store
- Leith Road outside the St James centre
- Nicolson Street opposite Lidl
- Princes Street from the Scott Monument to the Mound.
From personal experience, this sounds about right :) The brightest peaks represent about 500 buses/hour - or 4 buses a minute each side of the road.
Outside of the city centre, the 'knots' are generally major road junctions. The isolated 'Blobs' around the outside are terminuses where buses rest for a few minutes - if they're ahead of schedule - before changing direction to go back into town.
Uses data copyright OpenStreetMap contributors. Bus location data was via the Transport for Edinburgh App json endpoint, sampled every 30 secs.
Used QGIS heatmap styling for the points layer.
Firebug's diagram of the structure of a JSON feed that is used by the New York Times' Article Skinner jQuery app.
The "items" array contains article content abstracts; details of which are shown elsewhere.
Visualiser view playing nicely on a Pi after a straight file transfer
Python server, html, javascript and JSON data loading. Viewed in Midori.
March 2014
The basic format is that there should be a single hash key named 'content' whose value is in turn a hash with a single key named 'items' whose value is an array of the content items in the format shown.

This is the result of a "painting with light" assignment. The hot tub was a major tease, but as the cover was removed for the duration of the shoot, the water was only luke warm come time for sweet, thawing reward.

Flatirons Solutions Announces New iPhone App for Leading Content Management Systems
May 10, 2010
Flatirons Solutions Corporation today announced the availability of a new mobile device application that allows authorized users to securely access Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platforms to view assets and metadata, participate in workflows, and view rich media on their mobile device.
The application, called iCMS, builds on the Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) standard, and supports the EMC Documentum solution as well as iPhone and iPod Touch mobile devices. Flatirons Solutions plans to extend the iCMS application to support other CMIS-compliant content management platforms and mobile devices, including Android and the recently released Apple iPad.
The lightweight iCMS architecture includes both client and JSON-based server side components, and can be extended to support a wide array of client-specific business needs. iCMS is ideally suited for organizations whose knowledge workers need mobile access to an ECM repository in order to make decisions, advance business processes and approve formally managed content.
Flatirons Solutions Chief Technical Officer Eric Severson noted that the iCMS application is a good example of the leading edge work that Flatirons Solutions does to support the rapidly evolving needs of its clients. “As knowledge workers come to rely on mobile devices as a means of accessing enterprise information, optimizing the delivery of content to these devices becomes a critical business requirement. iCMS demonstrates Flatirons’ leadership in meeting these requirements.”
The iPhone version of iCMS is now available at no cost at the Apple iTunes App Store. For more details on iCMS, please visit the Flatirons Solutions website at www.flatironssolutions.com/iphone

after a long break from graff. Req started TDK the dustyknights. It was for the old timers in brighton, that we painted together under this new guise, somewhat detached from the rest of the uk scene. It was more of a case of flexing styles when we felt like it, without having to keep up with the joneses as it were...
little did we know how much of an impact our crew would make. Much to the thanks of Jsons, aND RAY'S characters especially.
I PAINTED THE EURO HERE, AND REQ ROCKED THE TDK
JavaScript is the local puppet master, in communication with a netherworld of cloud based servers. HTTP and JSON keep the AJAX alive as the Client pushes a shopping cart or whatever. Old myths lay just beneath the surface. The dragon, atop a treasure trove, is Python wrapping SQL engines, full of juicy secrets, authentication required.
一小時就從 Data 學會 Python - Mosky Liu
May 8, 2017. Did some coding this morning then spent the afternoon at the main campus of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, which is at the far south end of the city. We recorded an interview (looking forward to seeing the audio) and enjoyed the campus. This wall art is on the outside of what was the Philosophy Department auditorium - was, because the building was occupied and is now used for activism and punk music. My kind of philosophy department.
Accomplishments:
- 'A Model of Personal Learning' slides, audio and video put up
- recorded interview on connectivism and MOOCs
- created JSON Feed style feed for OLDaily
My whiteboard from day one at the ARSM in Barcelona, in the right Telefonica building this time.
I divided it into a 2x2 matrix for WWW vs Native and Markup vs Raw Data and put issues that touched all of them in the centre, then scored them. Native beat browser plugin 3-2 but markup nicked it over JSON 2-1.

一小時就從 Data 學會 Python - Mosky Liu
