WasteShed Visualization Project with Community Environmental Services

We have an on-going partnership with CES to help them share their work with the community by creating a way to visualize and analyze waste stream data at a “wasteshed” level. Withour project, they will be able to influence citizen behavior, change the secondary market (purchase of materials to be recycled), and increase waste diversion.

Firebase is a platform that manages all your android, iOS & web application development process. It provides you with automated data synchronization, authentication services, messaging, file storage, analytics, etc.

Firebase can help you develop or prototype the backend of your application.

Who is it recommended for?

Limiting on-device data storage by storing JSON data in the Firebase Realtime Database and files in Firebase Storage.

Sending notifications with Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Automated real-time data synchronization across multiple devices.

Gracefully handling the offline case.

Authenticating users through a variety of identity providers.

Rapid development of a backend service.

Note: It is not recommended for Apps that need a backend service to modify the synchronized data.

What is the use of an app engine standard environment in firebase?

App Engine Standard Environment is a platform that monitors, updates and scales the hosting environment while you just have to write your mobile backend code.

Extending Firebase with App Engine Standard Environment gives you the benefit of automatic real- time data synchronization.

Recommended for;

Firebase apps that need a backend service to modify the synchronized data.

Backend services that run periodically to process or analyze Firebase data.

Note: This integration is not recommended for Backend services that call native binaries & Persistent connections to Firebase

What is the use of an App engine flexible environment?

Unlike app engine standard environments, app engine flexible environments also run your backend service inside Docker containers that you can configure. This means you can call native binaries, write to the file system, and make other system calls.

Extendinge Firebase with App Engine Flexible Environment gives you the benefit of automatic real-time data synchronization, without the need to run your code inside the App Engine sandbox.

Who is his integration recommended for?

Firebase apps that need a backend service to modify the synchronized data, and that service requires a custom server configuration or third-party libraries not supported by the App Engine standard environment.

Backend services that require a persistent connection to Firebase to receive notifications of data changes. Flexible environment can hold a connection open for 24 hours.

What is the use of Computer engines & REST or gRPC?

Computer engines help you run virtual machinery on google, where you take control of the admin rights of the servers and the updates of the configuration which makes you responsible for maintenance and updates.

To connect to the computer engines there are particularly two protocols aka Rest ( More established) & gRPC ( Newly established). The benefits of gRPC includes efficient transmission, minimizing battery drainage & enhancing the security parameters.

Who would you recommend it for?

Porting an existing backend service running on an on-premises server or a virtual machine.

Backend services that require a custom server or third-party libraries.

Note This integration is not recommended for Apps that require automatic real-time data synchronization across devices, Automatic maintenance, Automatic scaling.

Burson Marsteller an international brand marketing agency, had a website developed to highlight the top 150 G20 influencers across the Globe. It was required that each influencer, ten per page, most recent two twitter feeds be pulled into each country page. Generating 20 calls to twitter per page load.

The main difficult was to overcome that fact that twitter only allows for 150 hits per IP address and then it will not service the pages. So the solution was to store the most recently updated tweets to a database and only call on the database when the 150 limit was reached, therefore still showing the user relevant content. JSON, PHP, MYSQL was used.
