This gives the impression that a train could pull right up and glide into the building, but ... the sidewalk's concrete is poured into the flangeway.

In the near field you can see the remains of a switch. The tracks continued on behind me. At the next corner is the flagpole. And in the far distance is, of course, the Brooklyn Bridge.

This building, now a bookstore, had three tracks entering it off Main Street (closer). The westernmost headed straight in. These two tracks, whose switch is now embedded underneath the sidewalk, curved sharply to the right to enter into the building.

 

In this distance is this building. But behind me are the tracks that go into this building. The only thing I can imagine is that this switch was used by trains to back up to a point behind me, then they would pull forward to get into the building.

Curiously, the cobblestones at both ends of the east-west crossing (perpendicular to this view) seem undisturbed, as if the crossing was put in place but never used. The flangeways are also substantially shallower and narrower, as if it was a trolley crossing. I have no clue.

The side track (through the Cooper Mini) obviously served the warehouse to the left. The tracks continue on towards the Brooklyn Bridge.

 

I used the telephoto to foreshorten this shot. It goes the all the way down to the flagpole, but on the way are one, two, and three switches. The tracks continue around a corner behind me.

The streets are narrow, and so are the spaces possible for turning corners. Sometimes they would have to back up, switch, and shove a car to get it into a building. These tracks head into this building.

Paper snake crossing the leftward rail divide

 

The Jay Street Connecting Railroad operated as Brooklyn's smallest waterfront railway between about 1900 and 1958. The role of this small railroad was to move freight cars from carfloats on the East River to the industrial buildings and warehouses that would load and unload them. You can still see a few cases in which long-unused tracks are going into buildings. Thus, the JSCR filled about the same role as the old "High Line" on Manhattan's West Side. [SOURCE]

Plaque dated 1838 on the east wall of the chancel. The initals JSCR would be for James Septimus Cox, rector from 1833-1873. This would seem to indicate that some work was done to the east wall of the chancel prior to the 1878 restoration.
