Here's a follow up to the shot I posted earlier seen here: flic.kr/p/2nMEEHt
Having coupled up to a loaded hopper train NS 8784 is pulling east out of town on Norfolk Southern's Roanoke Terminal District crossing over from the yard track to the main while an empty train waits to head west into the yard at JK interlocking, MP V243.1. They are crossing the Roanoke Terminal District W Line at MP W1.0 which heads south and at Starkey officially becomes the Winston-Salem District.
8784 is a standard cab C40-9, a model long since purged from the roster. The NS was the only road to get Dash 9s in the non wide cab version and this particular unit was blt. Jan. 1995 and then rebuilt right here in town at the now shuttered Roanoke Shops in Oct. 2017 into an AC44C6M and given a new wide nose and the number 4050.
The train is coming under Walnut Street and the small single level building at left guarding the diamond was once known as Walnut Street Tower back when this was the Virginian Railway's mainline, but was renamed JK a few years after the merger.
The Virginian was a small but mighty Class 1 that opened in 1909 and was financed by the fortune of Henry Huttleson Rogers of Fairhaven, Massachusetts who was one of the richest men in the world at the time as principal of Standard Oil. In addition to oil and pipelines (he first conceived the idea of long pipelines for transporting oil and gas) he had his hand in railroading as a close associate of E.H. Harriman. Rogers sat on the board of many of the great railroads of that era but arguably the VGN would come to be his crowning achievement that he financed almost entirely by himself. The road grew to 600 miles and was an extremely well engineered route designed with one purpose, moving West Virginia coal to tidewater on Hampton Roads in direct competition with it’s larger and largely parallel neighbor the Norfolk and Western.
Profitable and progressive the VGN electrified a 134 mile stretch of its mainline across the mounts from Mullens, WV to Roanoke in 1925. The VGN’s half century of independence came to a close in 1959 when the N&W merged it and on June 30, 1962 the wires were de-energized. But over the ensuing decades much of the VGN mainline remained an important component of the N&W and successor NS in continuing the task for what it was built.
