(cont.) So, long story short, unfortunately it doesn't seem like we'll ever know which Memphis Kids “R” Us store bit the dust first. But we at least can finally set the record straight that the city once had two Kids “R” Us stores (if not more!). As I said, the Wolfchase location is doing well, currently undergoing renovations to become a La-Z-Boy store. The former Mall of Memphis store, meanwhile, as well as its neighboring former TRU... eh, not so much.
The Mall of Memphis itself was demolished in 2004, two years prior to this TRU's closure. (Quick read on Wikipedia here; more in-depth stuff, I'm sure, can be found at that Mall of Memphis tribute site I linked to in the previous description.) Beyond TRU you can see even more abandoned retail in this “Trolley Station” shopping center. The TRU has seen at least a tiny bit of life around Halloween, when it operates as a haunted house (of all things!), but largely, the majority of retail around the so-called “Mall of Murder” area has (perhaps suitably; perhaps ironically) died.
I'm not sure if this was the first TRU in Memphis or not, but unless anyone can tell me otherwise, I'm willing to believe that it was. In any case, it certainly predates the Wolfchase store, given that the latter was built with the chain's "Concept 2000" exterior design, while this store received the earlier “rainbow tile” architecture. Seen at the Cotswold Wildlife Park is MCZ 8087, a Scania K340EB4/Berkhof Axial 50 C57F coach in the fleet of Marchant, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. It was new to Amport & District, Thruxton, Hampshire as YN08 JBE in April 2008, passing to Marchant in November 2012. It was given its current mark in March 2017.
