Wolfe Islanders | Beast of Burden vs Fair-Weather Ferry

Yesterday, the 5 km of sea separating Kingston and Wolfe Island was whipped by strong and sustained winds. Just shy of 50 years of service, the aging, rusty-looking and worn-out Wolfe Islander III (WI-III) was the working Beast of Burden making the rough-sea commute between the two communities. Those with a keen eye will notice in the background of the first two images, docked at the Marysville seemingly taking a “beauty sleep”, the next-generation (WI-IV) electric ferry who entered into full service just a few months ago, but sidelined due to below-water-line damage suffered when the vessel was blown off course and hit bottom back on 5 December. Following a couple of videos of the WI-III taken under similar conditions back in January 2024, the photo album sequences of shots taken yesterday of WI-III as it was pushing through the waves during three separate return trips back to Kingston. Commuters using the Wolfe Islanders may gain an enhanced appreciation for the ferries, personnel and skills required to ensure safe crossings to and from Wolfe Island, especially in rough weather.
