Shot of the loggia at Palazzo Wedekind in central Rome - complete with the arm of a police officer who at the time was resting against one of the columns.

This grand place is quite young by the standards of the city of Rome: the origins of the building dates to the second half of the 17th century - and what you actually see is even younger. The palazzo was completely rebuilt by Pope Gregory XVI in 1838. The current name of the place is after the banker Karl Wedekind who acquired it in 1879. But already by 1918 it was used by a publishing company, and during the second world war it was in very fascist hands, first by having the editorial team of a fascist periodical here, and then 1943-44 being the actual seat of the Fascist Republican Party. But from 1945 it has been the home of the newspaper Il Tempo.

The building might be rather new (by the local standards) but there is something quite old here all the same. 11 of the 16 Ionic columns on the right side of the loggia were taken from the archaeological site that is the Etruscan town of Veii.

And the policeman was not really guarding this building but rather Palazzo Chigi next door - which is the official residence of the Prime Minister.

This white marble temple is dedicated to Athena, the gardian goddess of Athens, bringing victory (Nike).

It is the smallest tempel to be found on the Acropolis.

The temple was erected in the 5th century BC at the height of the classical period of Greek architecture. The small temple is one of the most beautiful examples of architecture built in Ionic order.

The temple is situated on the edge of the steep rock of the Acropolis, with the city of Athens at its feet and the Aegean Sea in the distance....

The Ionic order is one of the three canonic orders of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric and the Corinthian. There are two lesser orders: the Tuscan (a plainer Doric), and the rich variant of Corinthian called the composite order. Of the three classical canonic orders, the Corinthian order has the narrowest columns, followed by the Ionic order, with the Doric order having the widest columns.

The Ionic capital is characterized by the use of volutes. The Ionic columns normally stand on a base which separates the shaft of the column from the stylobate or platform while the cap is usually enriched with egg-and-dart.

The ancient architect and architectural historian Vitruvius associates the Ionic with feminine proportions (the Doric representing the masculine)

B&W or color... for me, it works either way, but this seemed best... the forum lies at the south end of the long 850 m (1/2 mi) colonnaded avenue. It's big! 90 m (295 ft) x 80 m (262 ft) and there are what looks like two alters and a fountain within... the whole area is smooth and worn stone paved and there are very nice raised sidewalks on both sides of the ionic (I think) pillars most of which must have been re-erected. Gerasa was heavily damaged by three severe earthquakes in 363, 749 and 1033 CE (which by the way, doesn't make me feel great living just south of here in Amman).

Nevertheless, the structure is a joy to see and sit within and wonder about... Gerasa was an incredibly advanced City in its time for many hundreds of years... once again kudos to the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities... they do great work...

Featured today we have items from the new Ionic Nordic Life Gacha and TLC...The two paired together made a fantastic team for the lakeside scene...The Nordic house is roomy and great by the water because of its large windows and patio sliding doors and the furry friends well.....they are right at home in this scene!
