Introduced from Eurasia this a bird of the high plains of western North America, I didn't know what it was when it showed up in my yard six years ago. Read about a few reports of these birds around the province when I realized what it was, speculation was they may have been raised from eggs as game birds and escaped. It's the national bird of both Pakistan and Iraq.
Yellowhammer - Emberiza Citrinella
The yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) is a passerine bird in the bunting family that is native to Eurasia and has been introduced to New Zealand and Australia. Most European birds remain in the breeding range year-round, but the eastern subspecies is partially migratory, with much of the population wintering further south. The male yellowhammer has a bright yellow head, streaked brown back, chestnut rump and yellow underparts. Other plumages are duller versions of the same pattern. The yellowhammer is common in open areas with some shrubs or trees, and forms small flocks in winter. Its song has a rhythm like "A little bit of bread and no cheese". The song is very similar to that of its closest relative, the pine bunting, with which it interbreeds.
Yellowhammer males learn their songs from their fathers, and over the course of time regional dialects have developed, with minor differences to the conclusion of the basic song; all are mutually recognised by birds from different areas. Each male has an individual repertoire of song variants within its regional dialect; females tend to mate with males that share their dialect, and prefer those with the largest repertoires.
The pine bunting and yellowhammer are so closely related that each responds to the other's song. The male yellowhammer's song is more attractive to females, and is one reason for the dominance of that species where the ranges overlap.
Yellowhammers of the British and Irish race, E. c. caliginosa were introduced to New Zealand by local acclimatisation societies in 1862, and soon spread over the main islands. They sometimes visit New Zealand's subantarctic islands, although rarely staying to breed, and have reached Australia's Lord Howe Island on a number of occasions. At the beginning of the 20th century, this bunting was seen as a serious agricultural pest in its adopted country.
Populations of yellowhammer have also been introduced to the Falkland Islands, and South Africa.
The yellowhammer is a bird of dry open country, preferably with a range of vegetation types and some trees from which to sing. It is absent from urban areas, forests and wetlands. Probably originally found at forest edges and large clearing, it has benefited from traditional agriculture, which created extensive open areas with hedges and clumps of trees.
Populations have declined in recent decades in western Europe, including the British Isles, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria and Italy. The yellowhammer is a red-list (severely declining) species in Ireland and the UK In eastern Europe, numbers appear to be stable, although the trend in Russia is unknown. Changes to agricultural practices are thought to be responsible for reduced breeding densities. The introduced population in New Zealand has been very successful, with breeding densities much higher than in the UK.
This Cat just appeared on my Daughters Doorstep one Day..It seems to have made its home there now .It gets on well with her other two Cats. It is now a loving family Pet ..
The Damrak houses first introduced me to the Dutch word gezellig (meaning cozy or homely) I was always wandering in from the train station after dark and I would constantly stop and stare at these houses thinking it felt like an incandescent oasis in a city of fluorescents, warming the night and the Damrak with its soft glow.
When you walk by during the day usually things are shut tight against the throngs of tourists walking back and forth from the central station but at night when the crowds have dissipated the curtains open and the world seems to be welcome to become a witness to the nocturnal activities of the residents.
The Damrak historically was originally part of the Amstel river below the Dam that gave Amsterdam its name, Rak means a straight stretch or place to gain speed, so the Damrak was actually the straight piece of river below the Dam across the Amstel where sailors would pick up some speed on their home stretch to the port of Amsterdam.

This sweet girl is one of six baby red squirrels frolicking all over the front yard for the past few weeks. There will be more but this group is the first. Three out of the six have distinct white streaks and this girl is pure blonde with just hints of red. I have never seen one like her before in my life. I am wondering if the light grey male squirrel that has settled here since winter is the dad. I've been spending time with them all and they have become quite friendly. We shall see who stays and who goes once they get older.
Our new family member. She is very, very young and lost her mom and siblings in a tragic manner. She was being raised by a Chihuahua.
I named her Akasha as she is as fast as ether and knowledgeable as the sky.

I want to introduce You Veronica. I met her in Gerstruben in the Allgäu Alps. As a model, she acted very professionell and cooperative. I found that name on one of her earmarks written by hand. The fact, that someone gives names to his livestock is telling a lot how he is treating them and a lot about the agriculture in this region. It was really keen, to see that.

Let me introduce this little man, the very important Magic-Santa Claus and his first-and-only Assistent. They work in a top secret place and have a very important task to perform.
Do you know how all those big presents fit into the tiny sacks, that all Santa's carry? Well, this little Magic-Santa Claus has great magical powers and transforms everything into very tiny and very light objects, so the Santa's don't have to carry too much weight either.
Once touched by a human the presents immediately change back into their normal proportions. This process is so quickly, not noticeable for the human eye.
I was able to visit them, but I don't remember how ............. Suddenly I was there and then the next moment back in my house again.
All that's left is this one and only photo of them... I think Magic-Santa Claus put a spell on me too ;-)

Introducing another of my wild friends, Pancake, the dunnock.
Pancake is one of an enthusiastic and animated troup of dunnocks among the larger flock of different species that hang around our garden. I can't tell the dunnocks apart, except for Charlie (uploaded previously: www.flickr.com/photos/pogspix/52476354419) and Pancake, who both take food from my hand.
Pancake is recognizabe because of her beautiful markings ... and her habit of being right at, and nearly under, my feet in her quest to be at the front of the queue for food---I have to be extremely careful as I walk around the driveway, to ensure she doesn't live up to her name!
Here she is, waiting a bit more patiently, on a snow-glazed log a few weeks ago.
Couple weeks ago we had to send off to doggie heaven our 13 year old schnauzer that had a stroke.
After a long search, Moose has joined the Krach household to bring some new joy ... and to keep our 10 year old schnoodle busy. Moose is a puppy schnauzer with lots of spunk ... and kisses too.
Captured here when we took Moose down to visit with my Dad on this lovely Autumn day in Maryland where Moose got to play with our dog, and my sister's dogs as well. While being tiny ... he played very well with them. Wore them all out quickly actually.
He seems to not be camera shy as well ... which is nice for me ;)
The green monkey can be found in a wide range of wooded habitats, ranging from very dry Sahel woodland to the edge of rainforests. It is also commonly seen in coastal regions, where known to feed on seashore foods such as crabs. It also takes a wide variety of other foods, including fruits and invertebrates.
The green monkey is found in West Africa from Senegal and The Gambia to the Volta River. It has been introduced to the Cape Verde islands off north-western Africa (islands of Santiago and Brava only) as early as the second half of the 16th century, and the West Indian islands of Saint Kitts, Nevis, Saint Martin, and Barbados, having been introduced in the late 17th century by slave ships coming from West Africa. A small colony descended from 20th century zoo escapees exists in Broward County, Florida.
As other members of the genus Chlorocebus, the green monkey is highly social and usually seen in groups. They usually live in groups of 7 up to 80 individuals. Within these groups, there is distinct social hierarchy evidenced by grooming behaviors and gender relationships. (Wikipedia)
--------------
There is a large colony of these attractive monkeys living around the Barbados Wildlife Refuge. Although wild, they are fed by the Refuge once a day. I think that this is the dominant male, as he kept an eye on the proceedings while sitting on a high spot in the area.

When I played this game, Serein introduced me to the astrologian class. At the time, I thought I'd never in a million years be able to get to heavensward, unlock astro, and actually max it to level 70. TnT I hope one day she logs back on and I can play with her again...

I encountered this Cheetah family on the Mopani road not far from the Phalaborwa gate. I spent at least 20 minutes alone with them before the next homo sapiens arrived and had enough time to bond with the kids. The mother was a bit uninvolved and constantly looked the other way. She is the one in the background. I was selfish and parked my vehicle far away from the Cheetahs in such a way so that nobody could pass me and approach the animals to take photos with a mobile phone or the like and in the process chase them away. I really had a royal time. Haven't seen Cheetahs in three years.
Purple Loosestrife is a flowering plant belonging to the family Lythraceae. This herbaceous perennial, found in ditches, wet meadows and marshes and along sides of lakes, is native to Europe and Asia.
Purple Loosestrife has been introduced into temperate New Zealand and North America where it is now widely naturalised and taking over the habitat. Infestations of the plant disrupt the water flow in rivers and canals, resulting in a sharp decline in biological diversity as native food and cover plant species, notably cattails, are completely crowded out. The life cycles of organisms from waterfowl to amphibians to algae are affected.
A single plant may produce up to 2.7 million tiny seeds annually which are easily carried by wind and water. The seeds germinate in moist soils after overwintering. The plant can also sprout anew from pieces of root left in the soil or water. Once established, Loosestrife stands are difficult and costly to remove by mechanical and chemical means.
Fortunately, Purple Loosestrife can be managed though biological pest control. Research began in 1985 and today the plant is well managed by using five species of beetle that use Purple Loosestrife as their natural food source. The beetles can wipe out a stand of the plant by defoliating up to 100% of the plants in an area. (Wikipedia)

Today it is three years ago that we lost sweet cat Lolita, and about 9 months ago that Grandma Leyla passed away. Last Weekend we decided that we don't want to be without cats any more.
So I may introduce you one of our new feline friends: This is Kuddel alias Hercules, and he moved to our home last sunday with his girlfriend Florentina to help us to overcome our grieving about my sweet little Tigerlily-Gang. No picture of Florentina, she is still too shy at the moment to be photographed. But this Prince Charming breaks every heart in minutes, and he'll help her to trust us too! The photo is not made by myself, the large cameras may be a bit too much for the first days. So Tom took it with his smartphone and gave it to me to upload it here.
Please respect Toms copyright. No use of the photo without his expressly permission.
And: I don't like Comment-Codes, "awards", or such groups. They will be deleted. Explanation at my profile. Also please don't post pictures in the commenting-area. You could post them much better in your own photo stream. Your own words will mean much more to me than a universal-text. ;-D

Mountain goats Oreamnos americanus graze in a mountain meadow along the Beartooth Hiway in the Beartooth Mountains of Wyoming. Though not native to Wyoming, these goats (Oreamnos americanus) descended from small groups introduced to the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains in the 1940s and 1950s. They were brought in from western Montana were they are native. Some consider the species a compliment to the ecosystem. As their numbers grow, others worry about the effect of the goats on the alpine vegetation and the native mountain sheep population. Regardless of the concern that always accompanies introduced species, It is always fun to see them.

This is my husband Coofdy, a few weeks ago when we started photowalking again in the streets of North Adelaide.
He started a photoblog back in 2004, before it was popular, and inspired my interest in photography as an art form by suggesting that we (him, me, & our son) join Flickr in January 2011 and post a photo a day in the Daily Shoot group. That led to my great love of photography and my posting of over 8,200 photos on Flickr since then.
Since my recent return to Flickr, he has been on the verge of posting photos again. Two days ago, he took the plunge. If you can, please encourage him to continue Flickring by visiting him at www.flickr.com/photos/coofdy/
