I was recently reading Daphne Schnitzer’s interview and one of the many materials she uses is Harman Direct Positive Paper (DPP). This material sounded like it was just what I was looking for, so I had to give the 4×5 version a go in my Intrepid 4×5 field camera.

On day 4 of my Zion fall color trip, I headed into the Virgin River Narrows at first light. This scene, Paradise Cove, was on my list for the day, but when I arrived there in the morning, the light was dull and flat. On my way back, however, I'd run out of color film. I stood there for several minutes contemplating the scene before deciding to go ahead and try to capture it on black and white film. To be honest this scene does a lot better on Velvia. The wall on the left is illuminated by orange glow of reflected light, and the trees are bright yellow cottonwoods. The cliff to the right is deep red sandstone, and the water is a pale teal color. But the textures and light are still very beautiful on black and white, and I'm glad I did make at least this one exposure of this scene. In post, I decided to crop the scan to a panoramic composition, as the subject elements are spread horizontally across the middle of the frame.

“Experimentation.”
This is what Max Grew, co-founder of Intrepid Camera told me when I asked him what the driving force behind his company was in a conversation we had some days before the closing date of their successful 8×10 Kickstarter campaign.

First shots with the Intrepid. Obviously there is a development issue going on with the swirly distortions. Might have been an agitation problem or bromide drag or both. Or maybe it's the Arista film. I rarely see this with any other brand I've tried. But clearly the camera is capable. I'll call that a win for the first time out with it.

My 52 Frames: Week 41
Sometimes you just have to slow down.
When it comes to photography, using a large format view camera in and of itself requires one to take their time. Every step in the process, from setting up the camera to exposing the image, takes time and thought. If you really want to slow things down take that big glass lens off the camera and go back to basics, the pinhole. Nothing but a teeny-tiny hole and air between the world and your chosen medium. This weeks image is just that, a pinhole image, recorded on Harman Direct Positive Paper.
The scan doesn’t do this medium any justice at all. It’s a true fiber based paper that dries to a glossy finish. It has a bit of a warm tone and the blacks are deep and luscious.
You will spend some time using it to make pinhole images though. The ASA/ISO on this paper is somewhere between 1.5 and 3. Even in bright daylight you can expect to be standing out there for several minutes. If it’s a little cloudy, you might be looking at up to an hour or more. Still, I think the results are worth it.

It all started with a conversation with my Dad in 2015. He was into sea kayaking and had come across the WWII searchlight emplacements at Nigg Sutor – utterly abandoned and blissfully tucked away.

My 52 Frames: Week 16
Portrait of a weed.
I actually made an effort to go out into the world and make some images this week. Not a single one of them turned out. That happens to me more than I want to admit. Sometimes it’s just bad luck. Sometimes it’s the result of stupid mistakes that I can’t believe I’ve made once I realize what I did. Mistakes like calculating zone adjustments backwards and doubling exposure time instead of halving it. Like not taking my depth of field into account and getting a GREAT shot of a chain link fence rather then the subject beyond it (When done correctly you can all but make a fence disappear).
So, finding myself without a usable image for this week, I did what any good photographer does. I looked in the back yard for something interesting. The only thing I found was dandelions.
