In the Northern Cape this figure is four times higher, with around 38% of the children being underweight. One of the simplest and cheapest nutritional interventions is breastfeeding - exclusively for the first 6 months and together with other foods until the age of two. UNICEF is supporting the Department of Health to ensure that all mothers are aware of the benefits of breastmilk and are supported to breastfeed their babies.
CEID (Center for Early Intervention on Deafness)
CEID is an inclusive program that provides a wide range of exemplary services and supports for families to maximize the communication potential of children, from birth through age five, who are deaf, hard of hearing, and/or have severe speech and language delays.
CEID's philosophy believe in a "Total Communication" approach, which combines spoken English, hearing aids, and Signing Exact English (S.E.E.).
Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) is a sign language system in which signs and finger spelling represent the word order, grammar, and vocabulary of spoken and written English. It’s different than ASL (American Sign Language), which has it’s own grammar and syntax, as all sing languages.

Historic churches need saving grace

God save America's crumbling historic churches. They are falling apart in nearly every city and small town, crying out for divine intervention. Many others have succumbed to the wrecking ball, deemed too expensive for dwindling congregations to maintain.
A congregation wants to demolish the First Presbyterian Church of Carson City, Nev., constructed in 1864 with donations from Mark Twain. It would be cheaper to build a new church than spend the $5 million needed to restore the building, according to the Washington, D.C.-based National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The trust has placed aging, rundown churches collectively on its list of the most-endangered historic sites in the country. These ornate buildings can be found in Pittsburgh, New York, Chicago and Detroit, built a century ago with rare marble, wood and stained glass that are impossible to replace.
In Washington, Faith United Presbyterian Church relocated to a new building last year after its then-deteriorating brick church became too expensive to maintain. The 110-year-old building was demolished and its windows sold to a preservation firm.
The nearby Trinity Episcopal Church was razed a few years earlier after its congregation sold that stone and brick building to Washington & Jefferson College.
The borough of Donora in the Mon Valley could be the poster child for the crisis. An abandoned Roman Catholic church on a hillside a block from its downtown has a sagging roof and numerous signs of vandalism.
Across the street sits a vacant Methodist church whose pews are bathed in amber light from beautiful stained-glass windows.
There are at least five other threatened churches there that were built in more prosperous times when steel jobs were aplenty.
Donora is a place where many children from low-income, minority families spend far too much time hanging out on street corners.
The municipality with nearly 5,000 residents would be a prime location for a better-off Christian organization like The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform to establish a mission to reach out to broken families and troubled teens.
With inspiration from the Bible, the Ohio nonprofit has been parading trucks across the country since 2001 that carry billboards with giant, shocking photographs of bloodied, aborted fetuses.
A convoy of the trucks circled through Washington June 20, scaring the bejesus out of young children who caught a glimpse of them while being driven through town by their mom.
Regardless of where you stand on the abortion controversy, it's hard to imagine that anyone would want to take such photographs or look at them on a 22-foot poster.
Rather than employing tactics to frighten kids, the money the center spent on this protest against abortion might be better used to restore a church, say, in a place like Donora.
Lord knows, hard-pressed communities need more safe places where positive adult role models can pull children off the streets and teach them about the consequences of making poor moral and ethical choices.
At the same time, the rich adornments on these historic churches might be enough to inspire a future architect or craftsman.
At the very least, the children who go there might learn to appreciate wonderful, old buildings.

Dora García’s contribution consisted in pointing out the wealth of information and the activities programmed by the Freudian Field Library, founded in 1977 by Argentinean Oscar Masotta (1930–1979), considering the site as a knot which ties together art, psychoanalysis and literature. A display of publications drew from the library shelves and three conversations activated the space over three consecutive days. The first talk, a ‘solo’ by García, focussed on the library’s holdings of literary fiction. The second, a conversation, involved several psychoanalysts who discussed the founding of the library and its ongoing role in Barcelona, and the final event was a talk around the figures of James Joyce and Jacques Lacan. The events were live-streamed on Periscope and the video and audio files can be accessed via the video and audio icons of each talk in the sidebar on this page.

‘Composiciones’ is a a programme of five interventions specially commissioned for the first Barcelona Gallery Weekend, 1–4 October 2015. The programme complimented the existing calendar of exhibitions by presenting the work of artists active in the Barcelona art scene whose interventions responded to singular locations – public and private sites significant for their architecture, activity or their history.
‘Composiciones’ unfolded through temporary interventions at different speeds and rhythms and one-off events outside of Barcelona's contemporary art circuit – including a private psychoanalytic library, a former ceramics factory and a botanical collection. Pinpointing some lesser-known aspects of the city's cultural history and municipal life, ‘Composiciones’ offered moments of interruption, intimacy and immersion throughout the weekend.
Projects by David Bestué (at the Factory complex Cosme Toda, L'Hospitalet); Dora García (at the Biblioteca del Campo Freudiano); Jordi Mitjà (at the Museu Geològic del Seminari de Barcelona); Rasmus Nilausen in collaboration with Pere Llobera (at the gardens of La Central bookstore, Raval); and Daniel Steegmann Magrané (at the Umbracle, Parc de la Ciutadella).

This is the fifth time I've fallen in one week and this is the OTHER ankle that I've injured. The first time, I was sober, the second, not so much. *sigh*
Human intervention can change the instincts of the animals.
Rice and other eatables are placed at strategic points in Lal Bagh by well-wishers (their intentions being utmost noble) for birds and animals to "feast upon". Extremely shy birds, like this White-breasted Waterhen, are regularly seen at such places without bothering much about the people around. I've never been able to photograph this bird at eye level so close to me before.
Animals and birds have their own ways of getting the food their body needs. They don't need our charity.
A Pro Life Rally For Life In Dublin - Organised By Belfast Based "Precious Life"
As I had not carried out any research in advance I was a bit surprised by this rally as many (if not the majority) of the people that took part were from Northern Ireland or from the Philippines. On the other hand the counter-demonstrators all appeared to be local to Dublin.
To quote the organizers: "The Rally for Life in Dublin city centre was an outstanding success. Precious Life organised buses from all across Northern Ireland to take people to the ‘Rally for Life’. They joined with thousands of other people from all around Ireland, and abroad, gathered at Parnell Square. "
Catholic bishops across the island of Ireland encouraged their flocks to participate in this annual pro-life march.
“Life is our most precious gift,” said Bishop Philip Boyce of the Diocese of Raphoe, calling the rally a “celebration of life.” “To attend or take part in it in any way is a worthwhile endeavour to pursue as Catholics. We stand up for God’s gift of life.”
Ireland, both north and south, is one of the last remaining places in Europe where abortion is still illegal. However, according to the organisers, "the country’s pro-life laws are under assault from pro-abortion campaigners in Ireland, the UK, European Union, and United Nations".
The colour and the enthusiasm of the marchers grabbed the attention of Dublin shoppers on a busy Saturday afternoon. Streets were closed to traffic so as to accommodate the large crowd and the rally participants enjoyed themselves dancing and singing as they travelled from Parnell Square to Kildare Street. At the end of the march they were addressed by pro-life speakers including the Director and founder of Precious Life, Bernadette Smyth.
As they made their way their way along O'Connell Street they encountered a counter-demonstration chanting "Don't put your rosaries on our ovaries". Some counter-protesters referred to the marchers as bin the "Irish Taliban".
In general the event was good humored but there were some strong heated verbal exchanges that required intervention by the police.
James Heath lost his leg when he was hit by a train while high on herion. In May he took part in the show "Intervention" to kick his herion addiction. Here, he gets ready to atttach his prosthetic leg in the bedroom in his tiny apartment where he lives alone.
