View on the 2010 Achmea insurance company building located at Leiden Central railway station.
The 32,000 m2 building, designed by VVKH Architects, is a completely unique construction. The building is "hemmed in" on a longitudinal plot between the rail and road/tunnel in the vicinity of the railway station. This "raised" and "over-reaching" building was built in the form of an extremely slim column construction reminiscent of the shape of a tree, so as not to affect the road and the large number of underground pipelines that could not be disturbed.

This structure is all that remains of the Bob Hall Pier on North Padre Island in Corpus Christi, TX. The pier was severely damaged in Hurricane Hannah in 2020. The eye of Hannah made landfall just to the south and the pier was then caught in the huge storm surge on the northeast quadrant. The pier itself is gone now, as shown here, but an adjacent restaurant (privately owned) still stands while the owner is fighting to get insurance/disaster relief funds to rebuild.
The majestic architecture of The Mutual Benefit Life Insurance building. Located on Broadway in the north ward of Newark NJ; once the insurance company of choice for the wealthy families of the Northeast. The company is long gone and now this building is a nursing home.

Pamphlet for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. (c) 1956. No artist mentioned.
UPDATE: Several people got in touch with me and have said that the illustrator is most likely JP Miller. Thanks for the help, guys!
Again, a shame that there is no credit given to who did the wonderful illustrations on this Metropolitan Life Insurance pamphlet. I'd like to think that the jolly illustrations made for lighter reading on serious issues like illnesses, hearing problems, bad eyesight, cancer. Anything to take your mind off, I guess.
Farmers' Insurance announced it has become the first auto insurer in the nation to offer a five percent discount to customers who drive hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. Councilmembers Wendy Greuel, Eric Garcetti, Jan Perry and Tom LaBonge with Kevin Kelso of Farmers'Insurance. Oct. 17, 2005.
As it was full moon I stayed local again and went to this house i've been meaning to go to for a while now.
Apparently an insurance scam gone wrong, a guy burnt down his own house for the insurance and they wouldn't pay out.
Now I believe it has been sold off at auction, bought by a developer, it will be knocked down and a few new houses to be built in its place, such a shame people get greedy.
The Germania Building, built as the headquarters of the German Mutual Insurance Company in 1877, stands as a vivid symbol of Cincinnati’s German heritage.German-born builder and architect Johann Bast designed and constructed this richly ornamented Italian Renaissance Revival structure. The building’s iron storefront and cornice werecast by Cincinnati ironworker Leonhard Schreiber. A second story niche facing Walnut Street holds the work of Cincinnati German sculptor, Leopold Fettweis, “Germania”, a sculpture of a female figure representing the spirit and culture of Germany. A smaller statue of Apollo, the god of music and poetry, driving four horses overlooks the 12th Street entrance.
The Germania Building reflected the cultural interests of the founder of the German Mutual Insurance Company, Heinrich A. Rattermann. Rattermann was largely self-educated, yet became Cincinnati’s most prominent German-American literary figure and promoter of German art, music, and literature in the United States. The editor of Der Deutsche Pionier, the journal of the German Pioneer Club, Rattermann was one of the country’s leading historians on German settlement in America.
A few more odds and ends from my archives. I am adding the description that I wrote under a different image taken on the same outing.
I am only posting three images this morning, as I now have a loaner car and need to go out on a few errands. After a very kind friend offered to help me with getting this vehicle from the dealership to my home, I now have to try and get used to it. Yesterday was the first time I drove it, and just locally - had no choice, as I had not been grocery shopping in exactly four weeks! Thanks to being totally stressed out over this whole car repaint issue, plus toothache, I've only been getting 3-4 hours of sleep a night for more than four weeks. We are supposed to get a fourth dose of snow this week, and I can't see myself driving in snow. This car is very low to the ground, so I won't be driving anywhere out of the city.
Tuesday, 30 November 2021: I had a phone call this morning, in which I learned that my car is still in pieces and my Insurance company is still insisting that it be put back together and driven over to one of their preferred appraisal locations. They would also prefer that the hail damage be repaired at this preferred location and not at the Honda Collision Centre, where the peeling paint issue will be repaired. Meanwhile, while this debate goes on, my car is NOT being fixed!!!
"On 14 January 2015, I called in at Fish Creek Park for some fresh air and, hopefully, find a friend or two. I was lucky with both. People had already found one of the little owls. Somehow, everyone seemed able to manoeuvre their tripods and enormous lenses each time the owl moved to a different branch or a new tree. I love my easy little point-and-shoot : ) Some of my photos were taken at Focal Length (35mm format) - 1200 mm, so the owl looks closer than it really was. We were all treated to some good views, and it was fascinating to watch the owl get ready to fly down to the snow-covered ground when it saw some movement. It goes through some interesting body behaviour in the seconds before that rapid dive. I can't remember if it did actually dive down this time.
I was impressed that all the photographers were very respectful of this tiny owl, as this certainly doesn't always happen. Some of its time was spent perched extremely high in tall trees. Usually, it was just about within my camera reach and we were all lucky enough to see it perched in a variety of places, including some closer views. Any very close photos that are on my photostream, taken on various days, were taken when the owl unexpectedly flew right to where people were standing, seemingly without any stress. You would think that the owls would move away to a different area if they were bothered by the presence of people. Instead, they seem very tolerant, and continue to hunt, stash food (Meadow Voles) and even mate when people are present."
"The Northern Pygmy-Owl may be tiny, but it’s a ferocious hunter with a taste for songbirds. These owls are mostly dark brown and white, with long tails, smoothly rounded heads, and piercing yellow eyes. They hunt during the day by sitting quietly and surprising their prey. As a defensive measure, songbirds often gather to mob sitting owls until they fly away. Mobbing songbirds can help you find these unobtrusive owls, as can listening for their call, a high-pitched series of toots." From AllAboutBirds.

'Roid Week April 2025 - Day 6 #1
well a girl just doesn't know when trouble will come her in 1940s Europe better safe than sorry,
Having a mess around with my WW2 look even did my own hair do. Not totally happy with hair but the idea works and I really should stay blond.
I've done a few photos with look and I will be posting the best of a bad bunch over the next few days.
Would love to go to a 40s event dressed like this.
Sometimes you find a location that is just your sort of thing and the Allianz Arena in Munich was one such place for me. As the sun goes down the lights on the outside of the stadium come on – ideal for a silhouette type shot. This is a black and white version of a shot from a while back, I’m on a bit of a black and white phase at the moment!
CCWeek24: Breaking the Rules (Add a human)
No human added today! But WHAT IF I could somehow get a model up there to stare at the camera? Lying on her side in a red dress on top of that yellow sign. Maybe the niece of nephew Lee. I wonder if she looks good. She's probably pretty old. Maybe put wings on her. Hmm. I would need insurance. She could fall off.
I went to the bank for my usual transactions and met Marianne, an insurance agent—a friendly girl with an easy smile. She doubled as receptionist and was more than willing to explain insurance and other investment opportunities the bank had to offer. She has been in the bank for 6 months. She's into sports and loves to watch the sunset.

Went down a side street I'd not been down before and found this building just round the corner from 'Love Lane'.
It's the Insurance Hall, and this building was the office of the Chartered Insurance Institute from 1933 to 2018. Now it provides rentable office space.
Quite a cool building though ...
Thank you for your interest in my photography and for your generous offer to use my work for free to promote your book/magazine/website that you use to generate business for yourself. I would love nothing more than to help feed your family while mine goes hungry, because that is just the type of guy I am. Maybe I could feed them the free copy of the book you are offering me. I bet it would be tasty with some salt and pepper. I am also excited for the overwelming exposure that I will be receiving and the vast number of customers that will be directed my way because of that teeny tiny photo credit you tried to bury in the spine of your magazine. I just don't know what to say. You have done so much for me.
Now let me tell you the truth.
Good Photography is both hard work and expensive due to the price of equipment, the cost of gas, travel, insurance and self promotion. The shot that you have requested that I give you for nothing was taken inside of a 5 second exposure. The results of that 5 second exposure came from 12 road trips taken to the same location, 26 full tanks of gas, a $5,000 camera and priceless dedication to creating a good image and THAT is just the tip of the iceberg. There is no way I could ever calculate with any kind of certainty the amount of time and energy spent getting that one shot.
But I can tell you it wasn't freaking FREE!
Now with that being said, I would love to send you a HI RES version of the shot you requested. All you need to do is make my car payment this month but don't worry, I would be happy to give you "bill credit" with your payment and would gladly send you a free copy of the cashed check!
Ladies and Gentlemen,
PLEASE do not give your work away for nothing. Luckily for me I read somewhere very early on that if I priced my work at next to nothing, it would always be worth next to nothing.
I have received 7 emails this week requesting the use of my images for free including two companies that each had 2 seperate individuals email me! LOL. The Flickr Free Riders are out in full force. Please do not fall prey to these type of requests. Your work is valuable and if more people took a stand, the companies that NEED our images for their publications would gladly pay a fair price.
Remember this post and remind yourself that your work is priceless, until you give it away for free.
Portland, Maine
March 2023
Built in 1977, this arena used to be called the "Cumberland County Civic Center" prior to the trend where all such arenas and sports venues are now named for some big business sponsor. Not a fan of this trend, but I get why it happened - and that it was likely necessary to keep such facilities afloat. It is the home of the Maine Mariners (hockey team), and like many similar facilities, it doubles as a concert venue.
Photo taken with an Olympus XA2 zone focus film camera using Ilford HP5 Plus black and white film. Camera note: it's been a while since I had owned an XA2 - not sure why I sold off my last one some years back, but it's a fantastic little zone focus point and shoot. So this copy is new to me and arrived in great working condition from an upstanding eBay seller. The one thing I can't test until running film through it is proper exposure, and boy did it pass the test with flying colors - the entire roll was perfectly exposed. Note to self, Bob, KEEP THIS ONE!!
Is there anything more ironic than an abandoned Real Estate office? El Mirage, CA. Night, full moon, 2 minutes, red-gelled strobe.

I love how Westerns always seem to be the thing that is on TV back in the 50's.
Some pictures taken by the late Michael Cleary in 1999.
I suspect this was the first day of the DLR extension to Lewisham opening on 22 Nov 1999. The rail Replacement service would have been Crossharbour to Island Gardens whilst it was being built. Did they keep it going on the first day as an insurance policy?
Operator was Capital Citybus.
This platter goes out today for an insurance company having an open house. They wanted a variety of houses and cars, so hopefully they'll like these!
I happen to notice this building as I was going into the driveway of my Site Shop office so had to get a shot of it ... I processed it in a new Plugin by Redfield called Elementary... It is an interesting plugin and more my style than some of the others I have ... Happy Window Wednesday, Everybody!!
