Previously unpublished shot from February 2018. Although the weather right now in Scotland is unseasonably mild, I can fully appreciate the need for such a furry hat to cover the ears. I usually have to pull a beanie tight over my ears when shooting winter streets in Glasgow. Enjoy!
I took this in mid Summer in Iceland. it looks very cold even then. The grass makes good insulation in this colourful house.

There may be a day or two this week that are below the average temperature for this time of year in the UK. June, however, was entirely above average in temperature and at some points 10 degrees Celsius above average. Climate chaos will only increase as the North Atlantic jet stream is destabilised by simultaneous increases in ocean temperature and decreases in arctic sea ice extent.

When I got up this morning, the condensation on our well insulated windows (on the OUTSIDE, of course!) was incredible! It looked like Monet had been busy painting over the windows over night! The house inside is like a meat locker. Outside, it is like a sauna!! Here are some results!
Bearded Tits / Reedlings have to stay warm throughout the winter in the reedbed, so can really puff up their feathers to retain heat.

Just going through photos I took a year ago. I was out and about last year on this day and took a lot of photos. It also snowed in the evening. No snow here today nor was I out and about (grumble, grumble). This shot was taken in the 'Ell' which isn't heated and not completely insulated. The old windows are great for light, etc.

The late afternoon sun highlighted the 'fur coats' that help insulate the magnolia buds from the cold of the upcoming winter.
Plastic insulated screwdriver shanks are an electrician's friend. Less risk for shocks and electrocutions when you use these tools around electrical equipment. Always disable and lockout electrical equipment regardless of how well your tools are made for the job.

Wow that was a cold and long night! I didn't get much sleep in my tent as temperatures dropped to -8C. The valve on my insulating mat froze from the moisture in my breath meaning I had to blow the mat back up several times during the night. Fun times...

This bird was cold so it puffed up it's feathers to allow the space to insulate it from the cold outside.

The raccoon, sometimes called the common raccoon to distinguish it from other species, is a medium-sized mammal native to North America. It is the largest of the procyonid family, having a body length of 40 to 70 cm (16 to 28 in), and a body weight of 5 to 26 kg (11 to 57 lb). Its grayish coat mostly consists of dense underfur, which insulates it against cold weather. Three of the raccoon's most distinctive features are its extremely dexterous front paws, its facial mask, and its ringed tail, which are themes in the mythologies of the indigenous peoples of the Americas relating to the animal. The raccoon is noted for its intelligence, as studies show that it is able to remember the solution to tasks for at least three years. It is usually nocturnal and omnivorous, eating about 40% invertebrates, 33% plants, and 27% vertebrates.
The original habitats of the raccoon are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability, they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas, where some homeowners consider them to be pests. As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, raccoons are now also distributed across much of mainland Europe, the Caucasus, and Japan.
Though previously thought to be generally solitary, there is now evidence that raccoons engage in sex-specific social behavior. Related females often share a common area, while unrelated males live together in groups of up to four raccoons, in order to maintain their positions against foreign males during the mating season, and other potential invaders. Home range sizes vary anywhere from 3 hectares (7.4 acres) for females in cities, to 5,000 hectares (12,000 acres) for males in prairies. After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young, known as "kits", are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersal in late fall. Although captive raccoons have been known to live over 20 years, their life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years. In many areas, hunting and vehicular injury are the two most common causes of death.

Le raton laveur, ou plus exactement le raton laveur commun (Procyon lotor Linnaeus, 1758), est une espèce de mammifères omnivores de l'ordre des carnivores. Originaire d’Amérique du Nord, cette espèce a été introduite pour la dernière fois en Europe dans les années 1930 (après la disparition un siècle plus tôt de la dernière population introduite). Il doit son nom à son habitude, plus ou moins réelle, de tremper ses aliments dans l’eau avant de les manger. L’animal, de la famille des procyonidae, est essentiellement nocturne et grimpe facilement aux arbres grâce à ses doigts agiles et à ses griffes acérées. Il a le pelage poivre et sel avec de légères teintes de roux. On le reconnaît facilement à son masque noir bordé de blanc autour des yeux et à sa queue alternant anneaux clairs et noirs.
