Installed in 1981, this sculpture, known as “Birds Excited Into Flight”, was created by Larry Griffis, Jr. and is located in the median of Bidwell Parkway in the southwest quadrant of Soldiers Circle. The sculpture is made of cold rolled steel, and features a circle of human figures at the base with birds in a large pyramidal formation above. The individual figures are connected via long metal rods that criss-cross through the middle, being much smaller in size than the bird and human figures. The sculpture is the newest feature of the circle, with the area being ringed with houses and buildings mostly built during the first half of the 20th Century, with about eight houses from at Lincoln Woods Lane nearby that were built as infill immediately south of the Heath House between 1940 and 1970, and a ranch-style house from circa 1956 at the corner of the circle and Bird Avenue.
This is the set-up we are using for the single line swing. The long bolt with the eye goes through multiple boards between the metal trusses. It has something on the end of the bolt to lock it so it can't twist and come undone. The first time we installed it, we didn't have that and it fell, oops. I will try to get a picture of it, but it's hard to lift the tiles and get up in there.
This job consisted of a complete tear off and installation of new curbs for the skylights. We also installed new fanfold board over the entire area of the roof.
