We set off early today to escape the Miss Grim Fludir. Even fore went breakfast so that we could see the famous Black church of Budir and the conical mountain of Kirkjufell. It had put down more snow overnight and gale force winds with heavy rain and temperature of 1-2 degrees, as blocked roads, made our 600 km round trip for the day pretty tortuous.
We did arrive at Kirkjufell. There was no one else mad enough to be there. Conditions were horrendous.
Even getting out of the car was difficult against the wind but the rain lashed ice was impossible to walk on. I focused on walking where the wind would blow me if I kept my feet still. Towards the edge. It was dicey as hell. I made it to somewhere I could stand and get a shot. With my phone.

Walking through a neighborhood on the Near West Side of Chicago, we spotted someone's home decorated for the holiday.

I call these bricolage barns. The farmer takes what is at hand and assembles something useful instead of tearing it down. It also has an interesting philosophical meaning but I don't remember who used it first. For economic and I think nostalgic reason baby boomer farmers tried to save old barns but contemporary capitalist food production has made them rare. I know some farmers who make a lot of money doing large scale world flow of capitalism who try to invest profits into saving them. They are becoming increasingly rare because farms so many farms are insanely large with many workers. The corporations could care less. Even the Amish have tapped into mega-corporate food production. They take capital from one of the 3 major meat producing corporations to build huge mega factory farms that are an ecological nightmare. The Amish care even less than us English about the environment and regulations. They are abandoning older houses and barns to build McMansions. It is heartbreaking.
