For women in resource-poor settings, taking a certain daily nutritional supplement before conception or in early pregnancy may provide enough of a boost to improve growth of the fetus, according to an NIH-funded study. The inexpensive supplement consists of dried skimmed milk, soybean and peanut extract blended into a peanut butter-like consistency. Weighing less than an ounce, the supplement is fortified with essential vitamins and minerals and provides protein and fatty acids often lacking in the women’s diets. In this image, a participant in the trial prepares the supplement.

Bifidobacterium Strains constitute approximately 95% of the bacterial community in newborns who have been fed with breast milk. New research suggests that these are beneficial bacteria that have an overall positive effect on an infant's health. More research is needed to further catalogue and understand the microbiota that occur in breast milk, so that we can better understand the science of breastfeeding, and develop better infant formulas for those who cannot breastfeed.

This original Federation style house was built in Kalgoorlie in c1910, and was transported to Denmark in 1924, where it still stands today. In 1928 it was used as a home called the Eva and Fred Carson Maternity Home, for maternity patients living in isolated areas, who came to Denmark to have their babies. It was also an Infant Heath Clinic, School Principals’ house and a boarding house for single teachers’. It was restored in 1994 – 1996 and became a private residence. It then became a restaurant called Six Triple Three and today it is a restaurant called the Healthy Buddah.

I have started a new chapter of my long-term project "GoFundMe is the Backbone of Our Healthcare System."
Twins, Izzy and Davina were born in April of this year. Since then both babies have been diagnosed with left-side torticollis and plagiocephaly - meaning the shapes of their heads have been altered and misshapen by gravity and an inability to turn while sleeping. Insurance will not cover helmets needed to correct this problem, claiming that since it is "cosmetic" it falls outside the range of what Medicaid will cover.
The parents turned to GoFundMe to raise the $1500 needed for each helmet.
Today the twins got measured for their helmets in Idaho Falls.
