Had to use the flash on the camera at the state fair since I didn't want to lug around equipment all day.
Each year this special train takes people to the fair and back between Fishers, Indiana to Indianapolis. This is the only "fair train" in the United States. Passengers now board and depart from a nearby location across the street from the Indiana Fair Grounds.
Friday night at the Indiana State Fair is all about freaking out on the midway. Swinging and spinning on the Freak Out ride or just spinning on the Screamer in the background are both fun ways to test one's vestibular endurance.

As "Mr. Graphic," I've made signs for concessionaires at the Indiana State Fair for over 20 years. Here I am delivering some new signs on a typical day.

1912 postmarked postcard view of the Coliseum at the Indiana State Fair Grounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. A very large crowd of people were visiting the fairgrounds that day. This coliseum stood where the current coliseum is located. This coliseum opened in 1908¹ and was replaced in the 1930s by the coliseum we know today. The photographer was looking northwest when this photograph was taken.
The State Board of Agriculture had requested funding from the State Legislature in 1906 for construction of a new coliseum. Here are two paragraphs from their request as presented in their board meeting minutes.²
The Indiana State Board of Agriculture requests that a specific appropriation of $100,000.00 be made to it by the coming Legislature, to become available in 1907, for the construction of a brick and steel structure on the Indiana State Fair Grounds, 250 feet long and 200 feet wide, to be used as a live stock show pavilion or Coliesum [sic].
It would be difficult to prepare a more comprehensive statement showing the necessity of such a building for the Indiana State Fair Grounds than that which appeared in one of the leading live stock papers of the country immediately after the Indiana State Fair of 1906, criticising our lack of equipment. A writer describing the equipment of the Indiana State Fair, among other things said: “Approaching directly the heart of the situation, the equipment of these grounds is not at all adequate to the needs nor in keeping with the importance and dignity of a State Fair, except in the track and sheep and swine departments. Neither in its horse and cattle sections, its general exposition buildings, nor its machinery department does this State Fair measure up to its obligations to people and exhibitors. It was built too many years ago at a time when even the most thoughtful men could see no great expansion before the American State Fair, and it has utterly failed to keep pace with the astonishing development of the past ten years of this distinct feature of American agriculture.”
