Turtles are unable to regulate their body temperatures independently, so they are completely dependent on the temperature of their environment. For this reason, they need to sunbathe frequently to warm themselves and maintain their body temperatures.

The red-eared slider gets its name from the small, red stripe around its ears, or where its ears would be, and from its ability to slide quickly off rocks and logs into the water.

Red-eared sliders are native to the Southern United States and northern Mexico, but have become established in other places because of pet releases, and have become an invasive species in many areas where they outcompete native species.

The carapace of this species can reach more than 40 cm (16 in) in length, but the typical length ranges from 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 in). The females of the species are usually larger than the males. They typically live between 20 and 30 years.

Not quite ready to join the group.

This little lovely is one of four Carolina wrens that have been gifted my yard as their territory by their parents. As usual, the parents raised several broods in the yard this year. Once the last brood was old enough to be independent, the parents moved on.

These little wrens are more friendly than their parents were, they come very close to me when I am in the yard and they allow me to approach them as well. If it ends up that there are two pair, perhaps both pair will nest in the yard. That has happened before. They chose different sides of the house of course, still it was nice to have so many year-round and all of the extra activity during nesting season.

Enjoy your day and happy snapping.

CSXT L004 (old B724) has been on duty more than four hours and is just now starting north. They are technically still inside the Framingham Yard limits as they trundle northbound on the Fitchburg Branch at about MP QBU35.6. The entirety of the branch is designated as Other Than Main Track with this local operating at Restricted Speed but not exceeding 10 MPH the whole way making for an agonizingly long round trip. The two GP40-2s are snaking through the weedy trackage on the causeway over the Foss Reservoir/Sudbury River with a big train of nearly 30 cars.

This trackage dates from 1855 when the Agricultural Branch Railroad opened between Framingham and Northborough. In July 1866, the railroad opened a 14-mile extension to a connection with the Fitchburg and Worcester Railroad at Pratts Junction in Sterling. The next dozen years were rather convoluted as many small independent lines began to congeal into larger systems and by 1879 the route was part of the Old Colony Railroad, then ultimately the New York, New Haven, & Hartford in 1893.

This line, like its sister route to Lowell was one of only three incursions of the NH north of the defacto "Mason Dixon Line" of New England Railroading into Boston and Maine territory. For virtually a century, with few exceptions, the NH ruled CT and RI and everything in MA south of New York Central's Boston & Albany subsidiary that ran in a virtual straight line between its namesake cities bifurcating New England.

Today this 30 mile route meandering northwest is the last CSXT owned branchline in Massachusetts, with all the rest of any length that they still operate having been sold to MassDOT. The branch seems to have a solid future thanks to the addition of a busy new demolition debris customer near the end of the line in Leominster supplementing stalwarts like Ken's Foods, Nucor, and Bestway Lumber.

Happisburgh Lighthouse, Norfolk, UK

I didn't feel I could visit Happisburgh without taking a shot of the Lighthouse....esp. as the car park is so close to it. I gather that sometimes there is Rapeseed in the field and even if not you can get the tractor trails in the crop fields. Alas in February it's a pretty landscape and the best I could do for a leading line was the strip of worn path to the right of the frame. The clouds that would lead to some pretty spectacular skies were just starting to form and catch the blue hour light. I took the 'normal '3 bracketed images for the main scene but then had to take another three for the light itself and hand blended them.

Windmills and lighthouses are some of my favourite subjects to shoot....particularly in blue hour when you get the natural light but the beam is still shining.

This isn't what I would call a 'keeper' by a long way but I decided to post it anyway as I might never get to shoot it again.

Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia, and the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain.

Built in 1790, originally one of a pair – the tower is 85ft tall and the lantern is 134ft above sea level. The ‘low light’ which was discontinued in 1883 was 20ft lower and the pair formed leading lights marking safe passage around the southern end of the treacherous Haisborough Sands.

Today the lighthouse is painted white with three red bands, and has a light characteristic of Fl (3) W 30s (3 white flashes, repeated every 30secs) with a range of 18 miles.

Saved as a working light by the local community, it is maintained and operated entirely by voluntary contributions. Ref. happisburgh.org.uk/lighthouse/

for 365

My high school best friend and I used to listen to this song over and over and over again.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7dyXfHcYw8&feature=related

somewhere between then and now I lost myself and found myself again.

This past week I've been loading songs onto my ipod and I ran across the CD that had this song on it. It's a good thing I've been in my car alone a lot this past week or there would be some severely annoyed people - "do we have to hear that song AGAIN?!"

it's Pretty Cool On Black

and yes, I cut my head off again. I could make this face and retake if you're going to complain about it.

This is the culmination of well over a year’s worth of work: I think I started this project a little after the UCS Republic Gunship was released. So it feels good to finally have this finished and show it off!

I strived to make an accurate, studless version of the ship which incorporated some of the discoloured panels like the UCS version. I used the reference material collected from Star Wars Episode 2, 3 and Battlefront II.

Over the course of this project, a few outstanding Gunships emerged in the LEGO Star Wars community, which was both inspiring and slightly disheartening as they set the bar for MOCs of this vehicle incredibly high! Bousker made an excellent Clone Wars version and you may see some similarities between mine and Jhae's. Though we came to the solution of using the grated cheese slopes independently, his design helped inform some of the internal structure and the bed of the troop compartment.

I also looked to atlasr's version for inspiration, which while digital and at a slightly larger scale than I was aiming for, is perhaps the most accurate LEGO version I’ve ever seen.

Massive thanks to all the dudes for their inspiration, encouragement, feedback, and numerous ideas which I stole, you know who you are!

Panther chameleons are zygodactylous: on each foot, the five toes are fused into a group of two and a group of three, giving the foot a tongs-like appearance. These specialized feet allow the panther chameleon a tight grip on narrow branches. Each toe is equipped with a sharp claw to gain traction on surfaces such as bark when climbing. The claws make it easy to see how many toes are fused into each part of the foot — two toes on the outside of each front foot and three on the inside.

Their eyes are the most distinctive among the reptiles and function like a gun turret. The upper and lower eyelids are joined, with only a pinhole large enough for the pupil to see through. They can rotate and focus separately to observe two different objects simultaneously; their eyes move independently from each other. It in effect gives them a full 360-degree arc of vision around their bodies. When prey is located, both eyes can be focused in the same direction, giving sharp stereoscopic vision and depth perception.

Special:

- Anonima Fabbrica Automobili Lombardo (ALFA) was founded in 1909 and the new owner, Nicola Romeo, added his surname, so it became ALFA ROMEO.

- The Giulia (Tipo 05) was designed by the wind tunnel (Kamm-tail: gave a lower drag coefficient then for example a Porsche 911 at that time), Giuseppe Scarnati, Orazio Satta Puglia and Ivo Colucci in the early 60’s and introduced at the Monaz Autodrome.

- The name “Giulietta” means “little Giulia” in Italian, so the Alfa Giulia title was a play on words identifying the new car as a grown-up version of the Giulietta.

- “Lusso” means “Luxury” in Italian.

- This Gulia Super 2A Series "unificata" / “just two models” was available as this 1.3 and as Giulia Super 1.6 (1971-1974: 1570cc straight-4 - power 116 bhp / 5.500 rpm - torque 162 Nm / 2.900 rpm - top speed 175 km/h.

- The Giulia Series was assembled by Alfa Romeo in Arese, Milan - Italy and in Portello - Italy.

This was a small independent roadside pit-stop for weary highway travelers on old US-59. I think this place was around when the state initially widened 59 from a two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway way back in the 1970s. It appeared to be out of business and abandoned when this pic was taken. It was not affiliated at all with the Denny's national chain of restaurants. Any corrections or additional info concerning the history of Denney's would be greatly appreciated.
