After arriving on property 6 days earlier, some finish work was done in house and after that was completed, released for active duty. After bringing 126 down from Bay City, the 119 job swapped power and brought the new (to them) SD70Ms out to lead the train from Saginaw to Flint. Leaving just after sunset, the lights came out for the sharp pair going through South Birch Run.
Norfolk Southern's brand new "Honoring First Responders" unit No. 911 rolls down the Lurgan Branch through Boiling Springs on it's inaugural run to Spencer NC.

NJ Transit ALP-45DP 4526, wearing its new Semiquincentennial scheme, leads train #3320 across River Draw in Perth Amboy, NJ. This is the locomotive's first run in revenue service since being being wrapped/paint at the Meadows Maintenance Complex in December.
DL 3612 (former WNYP 637) leads the Pocono freight for the first time, and the first time on a revenue job.
What you may see here as a bleak day is nothing short of a monumental milestone for me. I know a while ago I already advertised a Sumida skyline shot as my first shot in Japan. But what I really meant was I thought that was the first usable shot I could edit and upload. But back then I just didn't see the vision enough. Excluding maybe 1 or 2 phone shots that are unbelievably awful, this is my first official shot in this country using my real camera.
I could not have asked for better conditions for a day 1. I love low hanging clouds and rain. Sure it proved a bit of a hindrance walking around Asakusa and Senso-Ji later but it was a welcome first look. This is what I normally pine for in the Pacific NW. And while I can say I preferred the view from the observation deck (that I already posted), the view from the ground wasn't bad either as you can see. (Just so you know when I return I intend to target the Skytree more, I hardly shot it at all last year).
I had two shots that had separate positives and negatives so I had to combine them in editing. I had a darker shot that didn't blow out anything in the top half and a lighter image that had the traffic over the bridge in less distracting spots (that taxi took up so much of the frame in the darker shot). This is why you bracket. After that, all that remained was to commit further to the given theme, I drained the saturation and attempted to remove any pieces that stood out. Ironically the weather would be a premonition of worse things to come within the week but other then that, I could not have been a higher note then at that moment, I was about to have a vault full of photos.

Storms and rain greeted the first arrival of the Chicago - Milwaukee - Saint Paul passenger train, Borealis, as it approaches its northern terminus at St. Paul Union Depot. The dark rain clouds made for a dramatic scene as the train passes through the BNSF Dayton's Bluff Yard and the CPKC St. Paul Yard.
Flying Scotsman approaches Colton Junction with its much publicised inaugural run from London to York. The World and his dog turned out to see it, so much so that the train was delayed further south by trespassers on the line.
The RBMN F’s lead the first public excursion out of Pittston southbound in the morning at Keen Apple Curve north of White Haven.
NJ Transit ALP-45DP 4519 makes its inaugural run up the Bergen County Line through Rutherford on train #1875. Since its debut in October of 2019 the 4519 has only made a handful of revenue runs.

I developed the first roll of film in my life last night and also made my first prints - everything turned out way better than I expected. This was the very first shot on the roll, so even though it isn't the most exciting photo in the world, I figured it would be appropriate to post. I am really excited to be able to shoot film and have a reliable way to experiment and see the process the entire way through, and I am looking forward to doing a lot more in the darkroom in the near future.
Arriving late due to PTC issues, Train 41 makes its station stop in Toledo, Ohio before carrying on its journey with a final destination of Miami, Florida.
Two trains in the morning out of Hanover M-F now, this will make for some interesting railfanning...
L136 switches Hanover Terminal at Center Street, this train is the new Hanover area switching job. No longer stationed out of Curtis Bay the train will be a week day occurrence in Hanover probably to ease the large amount of switching to fix the blocks York Rail leaves.

Here is a photo as the Symphony of the Seas made its inaugural docking in Miami. Quite frankly, I've never seen such hoopla at four o'clock in the morning.
Almost every night while crossing the Atlantic, we'd set out clocks back an hour. So, by the time we arrived in Miami I was wide awake at three. I'm glad I got up because there was quite the commotion taking place. Even before we entered the port, the ship was followed by several drones. Then, as we came in, we were escorted by a tug making these great sprays from its water cannons. It was quite the spectacle, I tell ya.
After all the celebrations died down, I went back to my cabin and tweeted a version of this image. Shortly after that it was picked up on social media and featured on USA Today. That was kind of fun to see a photo go far and wide so fast. I guess that happens a lot with news photographers. In any case, it was finally time to pack up and get off the ship. Lucky for me I was awake to see a little bit of history in the making.

Image Notes: After being missing in action all winter, the waxwings arrived in style this week. I wonder if they are later than the past few years due to the mild winter, or maybe it could be the berries were not ready until now? In any case, it's a drunken berry fest out there now!
Cedar Waxwings are one of the few birds in the US that specializes in eating fruit, but they have to be careful as they are known to die of alcohol poisoning from over-indulging on fermented fruit. ;-)
The inaugural Delta flight between New York (JFK) and Glasgow arrives as Delta 466. The flight was delayed by over two hours due to weather in New York, as Glasgow basks in 27 degree sun!

Pratt & Whitney introduced the JT8D to commercial aviation in 1964 with the inaugural flight of Boeing's 727-100 aircraft. Many variants of the JT8D family have been produced, covering the thrust range from 14,000 to 17,400 pounds and powering 727, 737, and DC-9 aircraft. More than 11,800 JT8D standard engines have been produced, accumulating over 600 million hours of service operation.
The JT8D-200 series covers the 18,500- to 21,700-pound thrust range and is the exclusive power for the popular MD-80 series aircraft. Since starting service in 1980, more than 2,900 JT8D-200 engines have been produced.
To ensure the JT8D-200 stays current with environmental regulations, Pratt & Whitney has developed a new low-emissions combustion system, or E-Kit, that is FAR 25-certified. The E-Kit reduces JT8D-200 NOx emissions by 25 percent, unburned hydrocarbons by 99 percent and smoke by 52 percent. The E-Kit exceeds all ICAO standards for new production engines and qualifies for the Swiss Class 5 (cleanest) emissions category.
P&W and Aviation Fleet Solutions (AFS) have jointly developed a noise reduction kit for JT8D-200 powered MD-80 aircraft. The kit enables operators to comply with Chapter 4 noise standards while maintaining thrust and performance levels, and was FAA/EASA certified in 2006. The kit includes an improved fan inlet liner, a 16-lobe mixer, a muffler, and a tabbed nozzle and can be installed on-wing.
Flight-testing of a JT8D-200-powered 707 in late 2001 demonstrated the -200's substantial performance improvements and feasibility to complete J-STARS and AWACS mission profiles.

I thought there would have been more cranks out for this, as it was only about half a dozen were present.
The ETHEL project to supply electricity to the newly introduced Mk3 sleepers in Scotland ran from 1983 to 1986, by which time the ScR had enough ETH converted 37's to operate on the sleeper services.
Germany, Hamburg, “CSCL Globe”, visiting Hamburg Harbour at its inaugural voyage. Actually with a length of 400 mtr, a beam of 60 mtr & a draught of 16 mtr it is the world’s largest containership by cargo capacity & built within only 6 month in 2014 at the Hyundai Heavy Industries, Ulsan, South Korea. The ship has a capacity of 19.100 containers / TEU. At the time of its completion, the 17,2 mtr tall engine was the largest ship engine ever built to date. The main engine of CSCL Globe is MAN B&W 12S90ME-C Mark 9.2 type long-stroke & low-speed. The engine has maximum output power of 93,500 hp at 69 rpm, powering two four-bladed propellers. Designed to maximise fuel efficiency while reducing noise & carbon dioxide emissions, it permits the ship a speed of 20.5 knots - 38 km/h, the maximum speed reached during sea trials 22.0 knots - 41 km/h. The CSCL Globe is first of a series of fife, the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean & Arctic Ocean; these ships will start their service in 2015 between Asia & Europe, they also will visit Hamburg during their maiden voyage.

The freighter was arriving as CAL5306 (China Airlines Limited) from Anchorage, Alaska and Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
This was the first arrival of a scheduled flight by China Airlines at Toronto.
Serial number 66901 arrived at Taoyuan City on delivery on March 31, 2022.

Protesting at the inauguration. I had to stand in line for hours at security checkpoints just to get on Pennsylvania Ave. By the time I was finally searched, they were turning away anyone with a backpack. Just arbitrarily, any backpack. Good thing I had a shoulder bag.
