After arriving on property 6 days earlier, some finish work was done in house and after that was completed, released for active duty. After bringing 126 down from Bay City, the 119 job swapped power and brought the new (to them) SD70Ms out to lead the train from Saginaw to Flint. Leaving just after sunset, the lights came out for the sharp pair going through South Birch Run.
Norfolk Southern's brand new "Honoring First Responders" unit No. 911 rolls down the Lurgan Branch through Boiling Springs on it's inaugural run to Spencer NC.
DL 3612 (former WNYP 637) leads the Pocono freight for the first time, and the first time on a revenue job.
What you may see here as a bleak day is nothing short of a monumental milestone for me. I know a while ago I already advertised a Sumida skyline shot as my first shot in Japan. But what I really meant was I thought that was the first usable shot I could edit and upload. But back then I just didn't see the vision enough. Excluding maybe 1 or 2 phone shots that are unbelievably awful, this is my first official shot in this country using my real camera.
I could not have asked for better conditions for a day 1. I love low hanging clouds and rain. Sure it proved a bit of a hindrance walking around Asakusa and Senso-Ji later but it was a welcome first look. This is what I normally pine for in the Pacific NW. And while I can say I preferred the view from the observation deck (that I already posted), the view from the ground wasn't bad either as you can see. (Just so you know when I return I intend to target the Skytree more, I hardly shot it at all last year).
I had two shots that had separate positives and negatives so I had to combine them in editing. I had a darker shot that didn't blow out anything in the top half and a lighter image that had the traffic over the bridge in less distracting spots (that taxi took up so much of the frame in the darker shot). This is why you bracket. After that, all that remained was to commit further to the given theme, I drained the saturation and attempted to remove any pieces that stood out. Ironically the weather would be a premonition of worse things to come within the week but other then that, I could not have been a higher note then at that moment, I was about to have a vault full of photos.
Storms and rain greeted the first arrival of the Chicago - Milwaukee - Saint Paul passenger train, Borealis, as it approaches its northern terminus at St. Paul Union Depot. The dark rain clouds made for a dramatic scene as the train passes through the BNSF Dayton's Bluff Yard and the CPKC St. Paul Yard.
On the first day of operations, FGAR 7156 departs Baldwin city limits with a trio of EMD power headed for Lake City.

After Tuxford. I went on to Arksey, thinking I would go to the foot crossing: no chance! No parking at all in the village, so down the lane to the level crossing. Couldn't make to there! Road blocked by cars left parked everywhere. So a grab type shot, no chance to choose a composition. So not the best days photographic wise, but great to see 'Flying Scotsman' on the tracks again, and so popular.
The first trip of D705 was certainly a memorable one with CSX 8624 leading the northbound train still sporting YN2 paint.
They'd stop twice, once at Alexis and once at Erie due to issues but they finally made it up to Carleton where the DT&I once crossed the PM, now CN and CSX.
With 100 or so cars in tow, they head towards Lansing past the old interlocking tower on the left, still standing after years of being closed. Both the YN2 paint and this tower are living on borrowed time and I'm glad I was there to capture this moment. Special thanks to AJ Border for ensuring we arrived here to be able to shoot this.

I developed the first roll of film in my life last night and also made my first prints - everything turned out way better than I expected. This was the very first shot on the roll, so even though it isn't the most exciting photo in the world, I figured it would be appropriate to post. I am really excited to be able to shoot film and have a reliable way to experiment and see the process the entire way through, and I am looking forward to doing a lot more in the darkroom in the near future.
The first revenue passenger train on Yreka Western in many years climbs Butcher Hill on June 14, 1986. It is returning to Yreka, California after a trip to the Southern Pacific interchange at Montague. It ultimately led to the return of a steam locomotive to the line.
Off and on for the next two decades, YW operated excursion and tourist trains. The YW 19, a 2-8-2 Mikado steam locomotive, returned to the property from Cottage Grove, Oregon and entered service in 1989. Today, these tracks are inactive.

Image Notes: After being missing in action all winter, the waxwings arrived in style this week. I wonder if they are later than the past few years due to the mild winter, or maybe it could be the berries were not ready until now? In any case, it's a drunken berry fest out there now!
Cedar Waxwings are one of the few birds in the US that specializes in eating fruit, but they have to be careful as they are known to die of alcohol poisoning from over-indulging on fermented fruit. ;-)
Newly-created West Michigan Railroad fetches the railroad's first carload from the CSX interchange in November of 2015. Today, the ambitious, young railroad has grown, having aggressively pursued new avenues of income all while investing heavily into the railroad's aging infrastructure.
Erode WAP-4 leads the inaugural special of late running 22627 Tiruchy Trivandrum Intercity out of Nagercoil town after its scheduled halt. This was the first and the last time this train got an electric locomotive, now it gets a GOC WDP-4D end to end.

I thought there would have been more cranks out for this, as it was only about half a dozen were present.
The ETHEL project to supply electricity to the newly introduced Mk3 sleepers in Scotland ran from 1983 to 1986, by which time the ScR had enough ETH converted 37's to operate on the sleeper services.

The freighter was arriving as CAL5306 (China Airlines Limited) from Anchorage, Alaska and Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
This was the first arrival of a scheduled flight by China Airlines at Toronto.
Serial number 66901 arrived at Taoyuan City on delivery on March 31, 2022.

These beauties are the first in the new oven. Let's hope they're as good as they look. The new kitchen is such a dream to work in although I notice that I move very slowly in it, as though not wanting to damage or get anything dirty. Not a realistic way to cook. This will pass.

Presidents Aguinaldo, Quezon, Laurel, Quirino, and Garcia wore western formal wear to their inaugurations. Roxas wore an ordinary suit. Ramon Magsaysay was the first to wear the once-lowly barong tagalog.

Same place, 28 years earlier, and oh how so much was to change in this scene. The track layout was rebuilt, the overhead wires were put in, and, more noticeably, the air was a heck of a lot cleaner.
Seen working one of the first diesel hauled runs of the prestigious 'Flying Scotsman' up Holloway Bank out of Copenhagen Tunnel near London Kings Cross is premier Class 55 Deltic number D9000, later to be named 'Royal Scots Grey' and renumbered 55022, back in the days before the yellow warning panel on the front, as was the Clean Air Act!
The Class 55's were built by English Electric in 1962 as a replacement for the famous Gresley A3 and A4 Pacific steam locomotives on the top expresses up the East Coast Mainline. Powered by twin Napier Deltic marine engines, sights of the line being smothered in clag and exhaust fumes were not uncommon. The Class 55's worked the route from 1962 until 1982 when they were replaced by the Class 43 HST sets, but today 6 locomotives, including the prototype, have been preserved.
I'm really quite proud of the smoke effects, which required a lot of crayon to get right, three layers eventually, but all worth it!
