Sturdy and reliable, my Witch Hazel shrub (Hamamelis 'Jelena') blooms in defiance of the darkest days of winter. Its rather weird, bronze-yellow blooms add color to the January gloom just when you need it most.

Blueberry farm in Abbotsford, BC with Mount Baker in background.

So, finally Monday arrives (after a completely abysmal Saturday and Sunday in as far as Light is concerned) and so does the Light. I did a quick scout for the caterpillar (planned for next post), nowhere to be seen. Settling down on the bench that was used for the bee shot seemed like the thing to do. Contemplating if I should change up my gear to take advantage of the light. Nahh, too much effort. I noticed the Blue Jays in a frenzy over the peanuts. I was still disturbed over the fact that someone, you know who you are, had posted a shot of a Nuthatch in an upright feeding position. That is highly unusual. Up here, the Nuthatch has taken it upon himself to teach the Blue Jays how to do it his way. I had observed that behavior for a while and thus I came up with my purpose for this Monday. I talked the Nuthatch into getting his top student to perform this acrobatic feat so I could document this. I watched in wonder as the Blue Jay followed his sensei’s instructions. If other people can show Nuthatches right-side-up, I can certainly display a Blue Jay upside-down. So, here we are; no trickery using software nor the use of any super glue.

Enjoy what’s left of this weekend.

Another wetlands dependent species, the Yellow-headed Blackbird can be found in large numbers in some western and prairie wetlands. where they nest in reeds directly over the water.

Species: Vanellus vanellus.

Also known as the peewit in imitation of its display calls, its proper name describes its wavering flight. Its black and white appearance and round-winged shape in flight make it distinctive, even without its splendid crest. This familiar farmland bird has suffered significant declines recently and is now a Red List species.

certainly not a duplicate.

Usually, I prefer to go in much closer for my shots but not being a fan of heights of any kind (this does not include highs), I decided to play this safe and also make sure that the dogs would not get away from me and accost unsuspecting strangers and/or other four legged creatures. I suspect what’s happening here is that the geese have realized that there is a void in Alberta regarding documented sightings of storks and have taken it upon themselves to rectify this situation.

These houses border on the man-made lake where some years ago I shot the pictures of the “Northern Lights”. Actually, those were just lights reflecting off the lake. Since I was completely wasted by the time we got to this location – takes a half hour of brisk walking, actually that’s a lie, more like shuffling along – this shot was taken sitting on a bench. This brings to mind that after all these years of taking pics, I still haven’t taken a bench shot. Usually too preoccupied utilizing it for its primary purpose.

Before I’m moving on, please note the duck on the lower roof portion below the two geese. I am not sure what’s going thru her mind. Perhaps just a feeling of not wanting to be left out of the activities. The other amazing thing in this shot is that I am actually up and about at this uncivilized hour of 7 am. This whining tells you that I was not raised on a farm.

I know she wants, I know she wants you

I know she wants, I know she wants you

I know she wants, I know she wants you

I know she wants, I know she wants you

Boy, I know you better

Than you think you know yourself

I know where your coming from

Seeing you together

And I swear I can tell

There's something going on

I've seen her expression

As she looks in your direction

It's there in her eyes

You say there's no connection

You don't think that's her intention

Baby, you must be blind

I know that she wants you

She wants you, she wants you

I know it instinctively

(I know she wants, I know she wants you)

I know that she wants you

She wants you, she wants you

You say you're in love with me

(I know she wants, I know she wants you)

Boy, you think I'm crazy

You'll say she don't mean a thing

That I'm the one for you

She just wants your body, baby

She don't give a damn

What I've been going through

She wants satisfaction

To be center of attraction

It's clear to me

She needs no imitations

She's got such determination

Baby, you still don't see

I know that she wants you

She wants you, she wants you

I know it instinctively

(I know she wants, I know she wants you)

I know that she wants you

She wants you, she wants you

You say you're in love with me

(I know she wants, I know she wants you)

You understand

You take my hand

You're proud to be my man and I won't let you go

I've seen her expression

As she looks in your direction

It's there in her eyes

You say there's no connection

You don't think that's her intention

Baby, you must be blind

And after that short break in proceedings, it's back to the pears.
