san Gervasio was a mayan ruin dedicated to Ix Chel goddess of fertility amongst other things. Our tour guide, Alberto, teased me that I would become pregnant after visiting this place. I told him if I did it would be a boy and I would name him 'Alberto'. THAT would raise some eyebrows at home...
This plaque is located just above the columns on the right side of the nave. It commemorates the restoration undertaken by Pope Pius IX in 1865-66.
This was the last major restoration/renovation of this church, but the results are now seen as mixed. In the Nave Cosmatesque inlay stonework floor was relaid following the original design and stain glass were added. Additional frescoes was added to the nave and also to the upper front facade.
However some archaeological treasures were removed/destroyed without documentation. Specifically, most of the ancient Roman columns had their pagan symbols removed; archaeological vandalism by modern standards.
I'm going through some of my better old pictures and rescanning and reprocessing them with some of my latest techniques. Some of you may know that I like to do this sort of thing from time to time.
Kodak! You and me, we got off to a bad start. I remember I ordered three rolls of Ektachrome 100G and shot two. I wasn't crazy about the colour rendition because my eyes were so used to Velvia. I think I can better appreciate it now but Kodak slide films are gone, gone, gone!
Anyway, I leave it to you to look at the large version. Yes, you can see the weave of the fabric of the sign. Yes, you can see the specks of dirt on the threads of the fabric of the sign. Crazy crazy resolution. And a noble pallate. One that really complements an earthy coloured subject like this soon-to-be demolished building's sign.

Dit kunstwerk kwam tot stand vanuit een opdracht van de gemeente Nijmegen in het kader van de Percentageregeling Beeldende Kunst. De kunstenaar werd voor de opgave gesteld een bakenachtig teken te ontwerpen, dat monumentaal zou werken en beeldbepalend voor de Waalkade zou worden.
In zijn ontwerp en materiaalkeuze heeft Berkulin rekening gehouden met de constructie van de Waalburg. Hij zocht een evenwicht tussen de verticale lijnen van de brug en de lijnen die terug komen in zijn ontwerp.
Het beeld toont vanuit meerdere standpunten verschillende Romeinse cijfers. Dit idee is ingegeven door het rijke Romeinse verleden van Nijmegen.
