Petra, Jordan
(May 7, 2010)
The Treasury is one of the most elaborate temples in Petra, a city of the Nabatean Kingdom inhabited by the Arabs in ancient times.
As with most of the other buildings in this ancient town, this structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face.
The Treasury has appeared in many Hollywood films, gaining particular fame after being featured in climactic scenes in the popular 1989 film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" in which its facade is represented as the entrance to the final resting place of the Holy Grail.
The structure is believed to have been the mausoleum of the Nabatean King Aretas IV in the 1st century AD. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in both Jordan and the region.
It became to be known as "Al-Khazneh", or The Treasury, in the early 19th century by the area's Bedouins as they had believed it contained treasures.
Many of the building's architectural details have eroded away during the two thousand years since it was carved and sculpted from the cliff. The sculptures are thought to be those of various mythological figures associated with the afterlife.
On top are figures of four eagles that would carry away the souls. The figures on the upper level are dancing Amazons with double-axes. The entrance is flanked by statues of the twins Castor and Pollux who lived partly on Olympus and partly in the underworld.
In 1812, the city of Petra was rediscovered by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

Malta was every bit as beautiful as I had imagined right from the day I had set my sight on the Azure Window. I was heartbroken when I realised Azure Window has been swept away by the forces of nature a couple of years ago. In fact, the biggest and the only reason we went to Malta was to get a glimpse of the majestic Azure Window.
However, as we were traversing through the island, we realised a few things - Malta is a beautiful little Mediterranean island, summer months and hot and dry, and that there are beautiful little seaside towns with a rich history and architecture.
Valletta is the capital city of Malta located in the south east of the island, between Marsamxett Harbour to the west and the Grand Harbour to the east. Valletta is the southernmost capital of Europe. This is the city skyline looking across from the harbour.

I was out of town during our recent snowy conditions but got back in time to see the mountains light up with a fresh coating of snow.
The little boys anxiety was palpable but he didn't have to suffer it for too long. His daddy soon surfaced and came into the shore at Portreath.
Dead man's hut, the monkey hut and the pepperpot daymark are clearly seen on this somewhat dull day and there was enough surf for body board surfing as the tide came in. The first place I ever took a holiday in Cornwall but this is only my second visit to this place in over thirty years...
The Monkey House or Hut dates back to the days when Portreath was a busy port, shipping copper out and coal in. Whilst the harbour was important the entrance was still treacherous. The Monkey House (although not known as that in those days) was used for shelter by the harbour pilots who would wave flags or lanterns to guide ships into harbour, or warn away if conditions were too dangerous….
Located towards the harbour entrance at Portreath and set up on a raised section in the cliff side is this small circular hut. Now an iconic part of Portreath harbour the name, 'Dead Man's Hut', belies its darker past.
Initially used as a the harbour master's lookout the hut's official title is the Lower Pilots Lookout. The harbour pilots were stationed here and would signal to ships whether it was safe to enter the harbour. Flags were used during the day and lanterns at night.
The name Dead Man's Hut comes from the days when the lookout would be used as a temporary morgue when bodies were washed ashore or found floating in the sea. This would have been the case in the shipwreck of the Escurial in 1895.
Sitting high on the cliff top overlooking Portreath harbour and beach is the Daymark often referred to as the Pepperpot….

Took a quick trip to 50 Point yesterday mid morning with a friend who had never been there...sad to see the horizontal timbers gone. All the ice and snow was gone from the beach as well...or at least for now.

Saw this snowy egret land on top of a pole at the boat launching dock in Alviso this afternoon. Although it 's a tiny subject, I thought it would add to the scene. I was surprised by the color profile of "Canon faithful" in Lightroom mimicking the color palettes from Kodak Portra film. There are also fine grain in the image even though it was taken at ISO80. Overall, the Canon PowerShot S95 has really given me some pleasant surprises. Yet it is so small fitting into a jean's pocket.

Only one problem with that I was actually perusing my Flickr stream NOT my go to album so I had to start all over again doh...you wouldn't wish to be in my head at the moment.....
